Uriah Higinbotham (1831-1864) PA/KS
On Sunday the 13th of Nov. 1864, the people of Manhattan buried two of their
most prominent citizens. Both were young men; both endowed by nature with an
unusual share of intellectual ability, both amiable and beloved, both filling
positions alike honorable to themselves and useful to society. We know of no two
men whose loss would be more regretted and deeply mourned, than that of Uriah
Higinbotham and Capt. Llewellen Gove.
Uriah Higinbotham was born in Green County Pa. on the 22nd day of May 1831. His
boyhood days were spent upon the farm. At an early age he commenced mercantile
life as a clerk in the store of an elder brother in Pendleton County, Virginia.
Here he displayed those qualities of mind and heart that have marked his
character as a man. Always industrious, trustworthy, and faithful; and
manifesting rare good judgment. Possessing an amiable disposition, and a strong
regard for justice, he won the esteems and confidence of all who knew him.
At the age of nineteen he resolved to gratify a desire to see and learn, from
practical observation, more of the world in which he lived. For a year or two he
spent much of his time in travel. In 1851 he visited the far west. Passing
through the state of Missouri, he crossed the broad prairie swells of Kansas and
the vast plains beyond to the mountains of New Mexico. In this expedition he met
with many interesting and some thrilling adventures. the next year he extended
his travels to the southwest, visiting the States of Louisiana and Texas.
He now pursued his mercantile business in Virginia till the year 1856 when he
emigrated to Kansas and located upon a claim near Ogden, In Riley county.
Adapting his labors to the condition of a new country, he commenced to make
himself a farm. He purchased a team, drew logs for lumber to construct a house
and fence his land. He also connected the mercantile business with his farming;
buying goods in Leavenworth and freighting them himself to Ogden and selling to
his neighbors from his wagon, a mode of trade quite common in a new country.
The hardships and exposures inseparable from an active life of manual labor in a
new country, exposed him to the fever and ague, from which disease he suffered
severely, and his friends think that he never fully recovered from its effects.
In 1857 he returned to Virginia, was married and then came back with his wife to
the new home he had made the year before.
In January 1859 Uriah, in company with his brother George bought out the stock
of goods owned by Mr. George Miller in Manhattan and the next April they took
into company with them their younger brother William and formed the firm of G.
W. & U. Higinbotham & Co. In the course of the summer they built a large store
on the south side of Poyntz Avenue. They were very successful in trade and have
enlarged their sphere of operations from time to time as the accumulation of
means and the wants of the community made necessary. To their enterprise
Manhattan is indebted for a large share of its most substantial improvements,
for for much of its business prosperity.
While pursuing the occupation of a merchant in Manhattan, Mr. H. earned the well
merited reputation of an upright and honest man; thus demonstrating that strict
integrity os not incompatible with mercantile success.
In mental organization Mr. H. was somewhat peculiar. He was remarkedly
self-reliant, and exercised his own judgment in all things. He had a thirst for
knowledge, a love for truth and faith in his ability to distinguish truth from
error. He had little veneration for popular opinions, and did not allow the
prejudices of early education to control his judgment. He thought that the best
evidence of truth was its capability of being shown to be such, and not the
authority of those who uttered it. To know that a thing was true was to him
sufficient authority. He venerated truth for itself, and not for its authority.
It is impossible that a strong and active mind thus constituted should accord in
opinion with the mass of the people until popular errors are all eradicated, and
until human progress has ended by the adoption of all needed truths.
The great mass of mankind adopt the faith of their fathers without ever
questioning its authority. The living faith of any age embraces the ideas of
independent thinkers the fanatics of the ages preceding; and the independent
minds of today, are the discoverers of the truths that future generations will
worship. Such men may embraces some errors, but they are the only men who will
discard old errors and discover and apply new truths. Mr. H. was one of those
original thinkers who of necessity lived and believed in advance of his age. His
faith was not a matter of mere speculation or a heartless formality but a matter
of practical life. It made him a just an honest man, a faithful friend, a kind
neighbor, a loving and self-sacrificing husband and father, and a universally
esteemed member of society. It was his faith that sustained him in his sickness,
that kept him calm and serene through the hours of approaching dissolution, and
enabled him to meet the transition from the present to the future life with the
full assurance that through the goodness of the Heavenly Father, he was going to
rejoin the band of friends on the other side of the dark river, in a land more
beautiful and in a condition more blessed than our earthly senses can conceive
of; there to be joined in due time by all the loved ones left behind. His only
regret, his only sorrow was caused by sympathy with those who were called to
mourn the loss of their earthly protector and companion.
The family and near friends have sustained an irreparable loss; and the
community can ill afford to lose the example and labors of so good a man; but
his example still lives and the influence he exerted upon others for good, will
never die. If his philosophy is true, he is now the guardian angel of the ones
who weep over his departure, and through the gentle influences of his spirits
upon theirs, he can still lead them up toward a better, a purer and happier
life.

Mary Higinbotham (1869-1871) KS
The Topeka State Record has the following account of a sad accident, which
occurred last Monday evening at Manhattan. The many friends of Mr. Higginbotham,
in this city, extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved parents:
"On Monday, Mary, aged three years, youngest child of Geo. W. Higginbotham, was
found dead in a swing in the yard of her father's premises. Mrs. Higginbotham
had been swinging the little girl, and leaving her in the swing, went in to
attend to some duties in the house. She soon sent Nellie, and older sister, to
look after Mary, and Nellie returned, saying that her sister had fallen asleep
in the swing. Mrs. Higginbotham went immediately out, and found little Mary
dead. The seat in the swing was a chair, wide enough to accommodate two children
at once; a slat formed the back of it. Between this slat and the bottom of the
seat was a space but a few inches. Mary seems to have lain down in the swing,
and her body slipped through the space between the seat and the slat, in such a
manner as to wrench her neck and dislocate the joint near the base of the skull.
Thus she was literally hung, though her feet rested on the ground. Every effort
was made to resuscitate her, but life was extinct. It was a sad accident."

Again the dread Death Angel has folded his somber pinions within the home of our
cherished and respected fellow citizens, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus W. Higginbotham,
taking their darling little baby boy, and adding another little grave to the sad
little row of baby tombstones, in the family plot, in our village cemetery. The
little one died Tuesday last; was four months old; had filled their home with
joy and gladness, was doubly precious from the loss of five little ones during
past years, and now this little form is taken from them, and they are indeed
bereaved. The funeral took place Wednesday, conducted by Rev. McCabe of Topeka,
whose sermon was most touching and impressive.

one occasion had her life been despaired of. She was taken with measles a few
weeks ago and it was the effects of this disease complicated by others from
which she died. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Park tomorrow

John Higinbotham (1818-1889) PA/KS
A LEADING CITIZEN DEAD.
John Higinbotham, one of the oldest residents and most prominent citizens of
Topeka, died at his residence on Twelfth and Tyler streets yesterday morning at
6 o'clock, surrounded by the members of his family. Mr. Higinbotham had been
confined to his bed for two weeks with nervous prostration, brought on by the
recent failure of the Clay county bank in which his large interests had been
entrusted to others. Though having retired from active affairs and not being
directly connected with the management of the bank, he felt the failure keenly
and his inability to come to the rescue of the creditors preyed severely on his
mind. Nothing could show more the sterling integrity of his character.
Mr. Higinbotham was 71 years of age, having been born April 8, 1818, in Green
county, Pa. In 1857 he moved to Kansas and engaged with great success in the
wholesale dry goods business at Leavenworth. In the years just preceding the war
he was an active and conspicuous free state man. He moved his business to Clay
Centre later and in 1880 came to Topeka, where he has since lived. During his
residence in Kansas he met with a large degree of success in business and before
the bank failure was accounted one of the wealthiest residents of the city. In a
quiet way he was a staunch and earnest prohibitionist and aided the cause
generously with his means. All his life he was an uncompromising republican and
voted for both Presidents Harrison.
Mr. Higinbotham was a prominent member and regular attendant of the First
Presbyterian church. He leaves a wife and six children, John jr., William, H. G,
Mrs. C Wells, Mrs. S. G. Spencer and Mrs. F. M. Bonebrake.
The funeral will take place from the residence at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon,
with interment in the city cemetery.

William Higinbotham (1847-1890) PA/KS
In Life and in Death
William Higinbotham was a bright lawyer, a whole-souled, genial, companionable
man, of whom it may be truthfully said that he was his own worst enemy. He was
in many respects gifter, and but for the deplorable weakness in will power to
resist the craving of appetite for strong drink might have risen to the very top
in his chosen profession. His faults and frailties are now forgotten. There is
nothing but the kindliest sympathy in the community toward the devoted wife, the
aged mother and the brothers and sisters in their hours of grief.
Deceased was born at Waynesburg, Pa., January 10, 1847, and with his parents
came to Kansas in October, 1857, settling at Leavenworth. His college years were
passed at Union College at Schenectady, N.Y. On his return from college he
studied law under Clough & Wheat at Leavenworth, and was admitted to the bar in
1870. In 1875 he came to Clay County, where he followed his profession for
several years, and then removed to Topeka. About four years ago he returned to
Clay Center, and a year later was married to Miss Amy Weidman.
The funeral occurred Saturday at 10 o'clock from his late residence in Lincoln
Park, and the remains were laid to rest in Greenwood.

Georgia E. Higginbotham (1883-1894) VA/KS
Suddenly and without a moment's warning death entered, for the first time, the
home of Mr. and Mrs. George Higginbotham, and took from them a little daughter,
Georgia Higginbotham. The sad event occurred last Saturday morning about eleven
o'clock. The circumstances of the death, so far as could be ascertained were as
follows: The parents were not at home, Mr. Higginbotham having driven away but a
short time before the accident occurred. Little Georgia was standing beneath the
windmill when some part of the machinery became dislodged in some manner and
fell, striking the unfortunate child upon the head and side. The piece that fell
was a wooden piece about four feet long, with iron on the ends. The child's
skull was badly fractured and her side badly bruised. Her parents were
immediately notified and a doctor was sent for, but in vain; the child never
recovered consciousness, and died about an hour after the accident occurred. -

William Penn Higinbotham (1836-1894) PA/KS
William P. Higinbotham was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1836,
and so was 58 years and two months of age. His life has been one of eventfulness
in the financial world, and in everything he undertook his great enterprise and
energy were notably characteristics. When a boy he began work as a merchant's
clerk and was thus employed for several years. He came to Kansas at the age of
twenty years, at the time when the exciting scenes of the state's early
settlement was being enacted. He located a claim and opened a farm. For the next
three years he participated in the efforts of the free state party. In 1859 he
commenced his mercantile career at Manhattan in company with his brothers, Geo.
W. and Uriah. Uriah dying in 1884, the surviving brothers continuing the
business until in 1866, doing the lending business in their lines. In 1866 they
closed their mercantile business and engaged in banking. In 1867 George W.
withdrew from the firm, and the deceased continued to conduct the business for
many years. In addition to his large banking establishment he conducted and
extensive farming and stock growing business, and was one of the leading
financial spirits of central and western Kansas.
Six years ago financial reverses came and he was compelled to assign and retire.
He was a liberal, public spirited man, and has done much to build up the city of
his residence. Every good enterprise, educational, religious or municipal,
counted on his support, and always received it in a generous degree.
He was married June 16, 1860, to Miss Carrie E. Stingley, of Hardy county, Va.
Four children blessed this union, and survive to mourn with their mother the
death of a loving father. They are Mrs. E.L. Scott, of Galveston, Tex., Mrs.
C.S. Wolsey, of Chicago, G.A. Higinbotham, of Kansas City, and John U., of
Chicago. All of these children accompanied by their families were present at the
funeral.
The Riley Regent (Riley, Kansas) 10/27/1899
George Washington Higinbotham (1829-1899) KS
George W. Higinbotham, one of the most prominent citizens of Riley county, died
at his home at 10 o'clock Sunday morning of heart failure. Though never a strong
man and having failed perceptibly in the past few months the end came very
suddenly.
The attending physician, who had been making calls more of less regularly for
the past few weeks, happened to be in the house at the time. In coming to him
Mr. Higinbotham entered the room from an outside door and started to cross it to
a chair when both wife and doctor went to his assistance, as he seemed unusually
weak. The end came just as they seated him. Strong restoratives were at once
applied but the heart gave no response. Death had been instantaneous.
From it's very early history, Mr. Higinbotham has been most intimately connected
with Manhattan's growth and advancement. Broad-minded, public spirited, and of
tireless energy, he was ever a prominent factor in the town's prosperity. His
loss will be felt by the many, and in various channels of life, by those he met
in business relations; by political friends; by men and women who knew him
socially' by members of his church and by more perhaps, less fortunate
financially to whom he held out a wise but helping hand.
George W. Higinbotham was born in Green county, Pennsylvania, in 1829; moving to
Virginia, and later to Connellsville, Indiana. Mr. Higinbotham married in
Connellsville and one son, Lewis, was born there.
Shortly after the son's birth the mother died and Mr. Higinbotham turned his
face westward, and in 1855 came to this locality. While hunting for a
satisfactory claim in Eureka valley he came unexpectedly face to face with an
older brother, Uriah Higinbotham, bent on the same quest. They pre-empted claims
in the vicinity and started an old time ox team merchandise route between
Leavenworth and Fort Riley. Later a business was located in Manhattan and
occasional loads peddled through the country into Colorado. The brothers
continued in partnership for some time, when the older man retired.
G.W. Higinbotham continued, first in partnership with E.B. Purcell for a short
time, later with Ashford Stingley, and Orville Huntress. In 1881 he retired from
the general merchandise business, going into milling, feed and live stock
pursuits. He continued it until the time of his death with a large and well
established business.
In 1862 Mr. Higinbotham married Miss Adelia Newell, Manhattan. He leaves a wife,
two married daughters - Mrs. John Winne and Mrs. Cornelia Hoadley - a son,
Scott, and the older son, Lewis, by the former marriage.
Mr. Higinbotham was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church, a Mason, and a
director of the Union National bank of Manhattan.
In earlier times Mr. Higinbotham was once sheriff of Riley county and once mayor
of Manhattan.
A man of decided political influence, he helped friends into office but asked
and sought no rewards of office for himself personally.
Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon.
The casket was opened at the house only from 10:30 to 12 on Thursday. At the
cemetery the service was in charge of the Masons.

Robert W. Higginbotham (1900-1902) KS
Robert, the little 18-months-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Higginbotham, died about
noon today, at their home near Ninth and Wall streets.
The baby was taken sick several months ago, of cholera infantum, and for a long
time was a very sick child. However, it soon got better, was almost fell in
fact. About four days ago it was again taken suddenly sick; vomited blood and
its little body was broken out in small red spots. It grew rapidly worse and
died at noon today. A short time before death a passage of the bowels removed a
small worm, of the thousand-leg species, and it is now thought that death was
caused by swallowing this poisonous insect. The worm was about an inch in
length, but smaller pieces were found afterwards, How the baby came to swallow
such a worm, if it did swallow it, is not known. An autopsy will probably be
held to determine, if possible, the cause of death. Many circumstances and
conditions substantiate the parent's belief concerning the swallowing of the
worm. The vomiting of the blood, the passing of the blood and small pieces of
flesh, the breaking out on the body, might indicate the presence of the
poisonous insect.
Robert was a beautiful baby, strong, intelligent, and full of life; a source of
never-ending joy and happiness to the parents, who have the sincerest sympathy
of all in their terrible grief.
No funeral arrangements have as yet been made, but it is thought the services
will be held sometime tomorrow.

The death of Mrs. C. D. Shortridge, which occurred Saturday noon, February 3,
1906, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.A. Wharton, gas saddened the hearts of
many of the citizens of Manhattan.
Mrs. Shortridge was born in Pendleton county, West Virginia, April 13, 1832. She
was married to Uriah Higinbotham in 1852 and came with him to Kansas in the fall
of 1857. They located first on a claim in Eureka Valley, but soon removed to
Manhattan when Mr. Higinbotham engaged with his brothers, George and William, in
the mercantile and freighting business, which he followed until his death in

Parthena Ann Higginbotham Holsapple (1827-1908)
WV/KS
Ann Higinbotham was born in Monroe county, West Virginia, July 4, 1827. She grew
up in her native home and was educated in the common schools of the times. At
the age of 22 she was married to A.L. Holsapple of the same state. To this union
were born seven sons and three daughters. Three of these children and the father
preceded the mother to the grave. Seven children, seventeen grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren survive her.
They moved to Missouri in 1857, where they lived for about twenty-eight
years. In 1885 they came to Kansas and for the past twenty-three years they have
lived where they first located on a farm not far from Corning, Kansas. Mr.
Holsapple died a few years ago since which time the mother has been kindly cared
for by the children in the old home. Her wise councils were highly appreciated
by those about her. She was a representative woman of the pioneer class who
endured the privations, toils and hardships of those who march in the front
ranks to subdue a wilderness and make it a fruitful land.
Grandmother Holsapple was permitted to ascend the Nebo of age and behold the
good land given to her children for a possession.
Doubtless in her youthful vision she had often seen this good land, which she
had the honor of living to look upon in reality, with its plains and valleys
standing thick with growing corn and the little hills rejoicing on every side.
Beautiful homes and fruitful orchards were hers to behold before she was called
to depart to her father's. Mother Holsapple was a very loving mother, whose
children delighted to gather about her and the grandchildren would sit upon her
knee and listen to her kindly loving words.
Death came to her as a welcome messenger for she had an abiding faith in a
better world and a brighter home than earth and time can give. To the weeping
friends about her dying bed she spoke sweet words of assurance that she was
going to that home where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and
there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shell there be
any pain for the former things are passed away."
Funeral services were held at the home June 22d, where an appropriate sermon was
preached from the text found in the 16th verse of the 91st Psalms. The musical
selections and floral decorations were very sweet and beautiful reminding us of
the fadeless flowers of eternity and the perfect music of the Better Land, which
Grandma had gone to enjoy.
Interment was in the Centralia cemetery by the side of her husband's grave.

A telegram received this morning stated that Herbert Higginbottom died in a
hospital in Kansas City this morning. The body will be shipped here for burial,
arriving on the early morning Santa Fe train tomorrow.
The message was brief and gave none of the details. It is known, however, that
death followed a second operation. Mr. Higginbottom was taken to Kansas City
last week to receive surgical treatment.
Mr. Higginbottom was a commercial salesman and had traveled out of Cherryvale a
number of years for a St. Louis hardware house. He was quiet in his manner,
attended strictly to his own affairs and was generally liked. He had an abiding
faith in Cherryvale's future and at the time of his death owned several handsome
cottages here.
The funeral arrangements have not been made. Deceased is survived by the widow
and one child, a boy about five years of age.

Harry George Higginbotham, youngest son of
Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Higginbotham, was born in Milton,
Wayne

Arizona
and New Mexico, and had held responsible
positions with the Western Union Telegraph Co. at Kansas City,

he tried different climates to better it, was of no avail, and on February 14th
he touched his key for the last time and came to be with his parents in the home
that hopes that he would be able to regain his strength and return to his work,
to which he was very devoted. It was not to be, however, and his strength
gradually failed and he peacefully passed away. The funeral was held on Saturday
afternoon at the home. It was conducted by Rev. J. W. Martin. The music was

Mary Howard Higginbotham
(1851-1919) VT/KS
Mary Howard was born in South Shaftsbury, Bennington County,
Vermont, June 9, 1850, the youngest of ten children. She was married to Cyrus W.
Higginbotham in October, 1871, and spent her married life in the home to which
she came as a bride. To this union were born six children, three of whom survive
her. She passed away on March 3, 1919, at the age of 68 years. She was a member
of the Presbyterian church and led a beautiful Christian life. She was a
faithful and devoted wife, a loving and sacrificing mother, a true friend. All
who knew her, loved her. She was a woman of strong faith, forgiving and
charitable to all. One of her mottos was: "If you can't say something good of a
person do not say anything." Her desire was to minister rather than to be
ministered unto. Many who have lived under her roof, as well as all others, who
came to know her well, may remember her sweet kindly manner and know that she
was indeed a true friend. The beneficial influence of the life of this pure good
woman, who lived so quietly and unobtrusively among us, is perhaps far greater
than she ever dreamed it would be. She leaves a husband and three children,
Edith I., George A., of Rossville, and Cyrus H., of Denton, Montana; one sister,
Mrs. J.K. Conley, and many friends to mourn her departure.

Cyrus Higginbotham at Rest
Cyrus Higginbotham, who died early Sunday morning in a Topeka
hospital, following an operation performed a week previous, was laid to rest
Tuesday afternoon in the Rossville cemetery. The funeral services were held at
the home conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka. The service was attended
by a large number of sorrowing friends of the family who had known Cyrus from
childhood and the genuine sympathy shown has been very comforting to the
bereaved father, sister and brother. Cyrus was an exemplary boy and his quiet
and equitable disposition won him friends wherever he went. From his childhood
he had been a home loving boy and it was not until August of last year he
severed home ties and struck out for himself to enter business in a strange
community. He was born in Rossville, Feb. 8, 1887, and had just past his 32nd
year February of this year. He graduated from Rossville schools in 1904 and was
president of his class. Later he attended Washburn academy and graduated with
highest honors of his class. Here he was active in athletics and captained his
college base ball team. After finishing at Washburn he completed the full course
in Strickler's business college. Returning home, he engaged in farming and stock
raising until August 1918 when he sold his interests and went to Denton,
Montana, and engaged in the real estate, loan and insurance business. Cyrus was
full of patriotism, and during the war made three unsuccessful attempts to
enlist, being refused because of varicose veins. He always wanted to do his
share of any task to be performed and his cheerful disposition was only one of
his many loveable traits. Early in life he united with the Presbyterian church
and endeavored always to live a Christian life. Beside his father, sister and
brother, his departure is sincerely mourned by his lifetime companions and a
large circle of friends in this community.

Cyrus W. Higginbotham, the Last of the Pioneers, Who Came to Rossville in the
Pre-War Days
Cyrus W. Higginbotham was born in Amherst County, Virginia, September 11, 1836,
and died July 9, 1922, at his home in Rossville, Kansas, where he had lived for
67 years, aged 85 years, 9 months and 28 days. He was the son of Elizabeth and
Aaron Higginbotham, the youngest son of a large family, all of whom have passed
on. At the age of 19 he came west to seek a home, and in 1855 landed in Shawnee
county -- although at that time the county had not been organized as a county
and was a portion of the Third district of the Territory of Kansas. Seven years
later, on September 15, 1862, at the age of 26, he was married to Henrietta
Button, the only child of Rev. and Mrs. A.R. Button, of Topeka. Three children
were born to this union, all of whom have passed on. Mrs. Henrietta Higginbotham
died in 1866. Five years later, on October 31, 1871, he was married to Mary
Howard, youngest child of Jared and Mary Howard, of Shaftsbury, Vermont. Six
children were born to this union, two of whom, Edith I. and George A.
Higginbotham, survive. Mrs. Mary Higginbotham passed on March 3, 1919, after a
wedded life of nearly fifty years spent in the home in Rossville she came to as
a bride. Cyrus Howard Higginbotham, the youngest child of this union, who grew
to manhood here, died May 4, 1919.Mr. Higginbotham was one of the contractors
who helped build the Union Pacific Railroad between Kansas City and Denver. For
several years he was in charge of an Indian trading post and in those years he
learned to talk fluently the Pottawatomie tongue, which in later years drew much
of the Indian trade to his mercantile establishment. In 1871 the present site of
the city of Rossville was laid out for a town and named Edna, but at the
suggestion of Mr. Higginbotham, Col. Geo. W. Veale and A.C. Sherman, who
purchased the town site of Anthony Navarre, changed to name to Rossville, in
honor of an Indian agent, W.G. Ross, a brother of Senator Ross. The town was
incorporated ten years later, in 1881.He helped to organize the first church in
Rossville, the Baptist, in 1871, and was a faithful member, supporting it
generously until it disbanded and then continued his support to other church
organizations of the town. He was a charter member of the first Masonic lodge in
Shawnee county, the old Indianola lodge, and the first Worshipful Master of
Hesperian Lodge, of Rossville, chartered in 1872. He was also a member of the
A.O.U.W. and I.O.O.F. orders. For nearly twenty-five years he served on the
school board and as president of the board for fifteen years. In township
affairs he served as treasurer for a number of years and in other capacities, on
many occasions without opposition. Mr. Higginbotham was in the mercantile
business nearly forty years, first at Indianola and later in Rossville. He was a
pioneer in the pureblood livestock business of the state, and was always
interested in the improving of livestock. His was a life of usefulness, a man
whose word could be depended upon, public spirited and always ready and eager to
help the needy. He always had a kind and cheery greeting for all whom he met and
helped many young men in his employ to enter business for themselves. Mr.
Higginbotham was practically a self-made man. His parents were a well-known old
Virginia family who lost the greater part of their property at the close of the
Civil war. After retiring from the mercantile business, Mr. Higginbotham
continued to maintain his Insurance and Notary office up to the time of his
death. He was down to his office as usual the day before he was stricken by the
paralytic stroke that ended his earthly life a day later. His agency of the
Aetna Building and Loan Association was one of the oldest. The funeral service
held at the home Tuesday, July 11, at 2 p.m. was attended by hundreds of
old-time friends and neighbors, who sorrowfully followed his remains to their
resting place in Rossville cemetery. Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka, conducted the
service at the house. The Masonic ritual service was exemplified at the grave.

Council Grove Republican 10/10/1983
John Clair Higginbotham
(1914-1983) KS
Former Mayor Dies Friday
John C. Higginbotham, retired Savings and Loan Association
president and former Mayor of Council Grove, died unexpectedly at his home here
Friday afternoon. He was 60 years old.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:00 o'clock this morning at
St. Rose Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph L. Schacht officiating, and
burial was in Calvary Cemetery here. Rosary was recited Sunday night at the
Kendall Funeral Chapel.
A heart condition the last 10 years of his life had curtailed
Mr. Higginbotham's more energetic pursuits, but this did not change his love for
reading and for discussion with friends. It was a heart attack that claimed his
life as he rested at home.
Born June 11, 1914, at Herington, he was the son of Aaron
Calhoun and Grace Smith Higginbotham.
John was graduated from Kansas State College of Agriculture
and Applied Science, Manhattan, in 1936. He served his country during World War
II as a Captain in the Army Air Corps and spent three years with the ground
forces in England during that conflict.
He was an officer in a CCC camp at Burlington, and he farmed
near that city a few years before and after World War II and in 1951 moved to
Kansas City. He worked as a federal bank examiner a number of years and then
became a state examiner because it did not require as much travel and time away
from his home.
In 1964 he moved his family to Council Grove and purchased the
Morris County Savings and Loan Association, which he operated as president until
a heart attack on September 22, 1973, forced him to retire. He sold that
financial institution to Anchor Savings Association.
He extended the services of the Morris County Savings and Loan
Association to Junction City for a few years. The new headquarters building in
Council Grove was constructed during the time he was head of the association.
