The Recorder 9/18/2018
Martha Elizabeth Gully Fanning HIgginbotham
(1944-2018) MA
GREENFIELD - Kate Higginbotham, hockey-mom, dog lover, hot
air balloonist and storyteller extraordinaire passed away peacefully on Friday,
September 14, 2018 at the age of 74. A long-time resident of Colrain and
Greenfield, Massachusetts, Kate was born to parents, William and Martha Gully on
February 18, 1944, and was the eldest of five siblings. Kate married John
Fanning of Shrewsbury, MA in 1960 and they had 3 children and numerous foster
children. Kate transformed herself many times over the years, both personally
and professionally. Born Martha Elizabeth Gully, she chose her own name upon
moving with life-long friends, Merry Lein and Ann Cahill to Franklin County in
1978. She was a parent liaison at Head Start, housekeeper in Historic Deerfield,
clerk, and a realtor at both the Ruggeri and Pratt Real Estate Agencies. Perhaps
her most fulfilling work was as a feature writer at the West County News, where
she had a special knack for writing interesting stories about her neighbors,
always shining a light on their humanity. Kate really found her "soul" place
when she moved to the banks of the North River in Colrain, MA. She loved the
"West County," and was very active in the community. She was most proud of her
efforts to establish the long-standing, local celebration of International
Womyns Day, encouraging her friends and neighbors to be socially and politically
active. Kate lived briefly in Prescott, Arizona, another place she was
passionate about, finding great joy in its natural beauty. In 2010, she returned
to Greenfield, where she worked at the Shelburne Falls Senior Center,
re-inventing herself once again. This was a very happy time for Kate as she
reconnected with her Greenfield family over Sunday dinners. She spent the last
several years of her life enjoying the company of her many friends and family,
and was especially cheered by her own grandchildren and those of her dear
friends. Kate is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ginger
Fanning of Milton, MA, daughter, Stephanie George and her husband, Joseph of
Greenfield, and daughter, Erin Fanning and husband, Fulgencio Lazo of Seattle,
WA. Kate also leaves her four younger siblings, Kevin Gully of Worcester, MA,
Christine Nicoletta of Concord, NH, Anthony Gully of Quincy, MA and Andrew Gully
of Ipswich, MA. Kate leaves four grandchildren, Joey George and fiancée Kaytlin
David of Turners Falls, MA, Matias and Maya Lazo-Fanning of Seattle, WA and Jack
Ryan Fanning of Milton, MA. Kate had many nieces and nephews, and was blessed
with many, many loving friends. Kate will be cremated and her ashes scattered
over the North River in Colrain, as was her wish. A memorial service will be
held in her honor at 1PM on Saturday, September 22 at the Shelburne Falls Senior
Center, 7 Main St, Shelburne Falls. Her children invite you to join them for a
luncheon to share remembrances and celebrate her life. The Shelburne village,
which she adored, is a fitting place for her memorial. We invite you to join us
afterward for a walk across the Bridge of Flowers and past the Glacial Potholes,
something Kate would have loved! In lieu of flowers, donations in Kate's honor
may be made to LifePath, 101 Munson St, Suite 201, Greenfield, MA 01301 a
non-profit organization dedicated to helping seniors age in place and live
dignified, independent lives. Arrangements are under the direction of Kostanski

Paul R. Higginbottom (1936-20200
MA
March 29, 1936 - June 27, 2020
Methuen - Paul R. "Higgie" Higginbottom of Methuen, MA, passed peacefully from
this world on Saturday, June 27, 2020.
The seventh son of Joseph Samuel and Mary (Byrne) Higginbottom of Lawrence, MA,
Paul was the last of the original Park Street Higginbottom Boys. Fiercely proud
of his Irish-American heritage and his humble upbringing, Paul learned some of
life's most important lessons on the streets of Lawrence, such as treating
others fairly, and out of necessity, how to always "hustle a buck." He graduated
Central Catholic High School in 1954 and was the last Affiliate of the Marist
Order, developing close ties with many of the Order's Brothers.
In the summer of 1960, Paul met the love of his life, Lorraine L. Davis, at
Hampton Beach and they were married in 1961. He found his calling in caring for
others and worked as an orderly at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen before
training as a nurse at the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Soldiers Home in
Chelsea. There he cared for veterans from many conflicts, ranging from the
Mexican Expedition through Vietnam. Paul advanced through various positions
there eventually becoming the Night Administrator until health issues forced an
early retirement. He continued to serve others after his retirement in many
capacities such as a Justice of the Peace as well as serving on the Housing
Commissions in both Methuen and Andover.
Paul developed a lifelong interest in real estate, during which he was always a
friend to the independent tradesmen and handyman. However, his greatest love and
passion was his three sons, Mark, Michael, and Edward Higginbottom, and their
children. He dedicated his life to ensuring that they and their children,
Patrick, Brendan, Lauren, Ryan, Ella, and Conor, grew into men and women of
character and compassion of whom his own parents would be proud. His standing
mottos were, "A man is only as good as his word," and "Your good name is the
only thing that you take to the grave."
In addition to his parents, Paul is predeceased by his brothers, Joseph "Joe,"
Bernard "Buddy," Francis "Dede," Laurence "Larry," John "Hot Dog," and James
"Jimmy."
Paul is survived by his wife, Lorraine L. (Davis) Higginbottom; sons, Mark
Higginbottom of Andover, Michael Higginbottom and his wife, Catherine (Rossbach)
of Leavenworth, KS, and Edward Higginbottom and his wife, Rachel (Salzillo) of
Windham, NH; his six adored grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service for
Paul at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126
Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in
Methuen.
In lieu of flowers, the Higginbottom family requests a simple act of kindness
for a stranger as Paul was always ready to help a friend, even one he had never
met before.

Cape Cod Times July 18, 2022
Anne Marie Ryan Higginbottom
(ca1940-2022) VT/MA
Anne Ryan Higginbottom died on May 12 at age
82, following a long struggle with declining health. Anne is survived by
her husband of 60 years, George, her two adult children, Heather (Daniel
Sepulveda), Eric (Stella Sumilang), a brother, Peter Ryan (Patricia), a
sister, Kathy Ryan, and two beloved grandchildren, Gisele, 9, and
Santiago, 7, a niece, Kelly Ryan, a nephew, Peter Ryan, and several
grand nieces and nephews.
Anne grew up in Bristol Vermont among dairy farms, mountains, and fields
and forests rife with wildlife, the stunning natural endowments of rural
Vermont. Complementing her lifelong love for Vermont was her love of
Cape Cod, its waters and its expansive beaches which she walked
frequently and joyfully until she was unable to. Numerous short
residencies at the The National Seashore dune shacks, managed by The
Peaked Hill Trust, were special opportunities for Anne and her dear
friend Wendy to connect to the wild and beautiful aspects of uninhabited
Cape Cod.
Anne and George met in Boston at Ginn and Company Publishers in 1962.
They fell in love and married soon after. George was subsequently
employed by a competitor and the couple moved to Berkeley, California.
There, Anne worked as Publicity Director for the University of
California Press, supporting George in graduate study and a career
change, while also deepening her commitment to racial equality,
frequently and actively working for integration and social justice
throughout the Bay Area.
Several years later Anne and George left California and moved back East,
to Vermont, where their son, Eric, was born. When Eric entered
pre-school, Anne began planning for a career in teaching. Her teaching
experience over time ranged from middle school and an urban magnet
school, to high school and college and, in retirement, teaching English
to non-native speakers. Anne was a charismatic and motivational teacher
beloved and admired by students of all ages. In part-time and full-time
study Anne earned several graduate degrees, both at Syracuse University
and the State University of New York at Binghamton. In 1972, Anne took a
break from teaching to raise her newborn daughter, Heather, returning to
the classroom as Heather began school.
Anne was involved in the arts from an early age: in music, as a twelve
year old organist for the St. Ambrose church choir led by her father and
in landscape painting. Later in life Anne studied recorder and played
with sufficient proficiency to join the Binghamton University Early
Music Consort. In retirement Anne returned to painting and made many new
friends among her fellow artists. She also served for several years as a
docent at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, MA for which she was
well qualified from years of studying, collecting, and creating art.
In recent years Anne courageously faced the challenges of declining
health: intractable pain, severe balance and movement limitations, and
various other problems. Anne found solace in her painting classes and
book clubs where she presented to her many friends a cheerful demeanor,
sharp intelligence, and joyful interaction with art and literature.
Yoga, meditation, and the teachings of the Vietnamese Buddhist
Monk,Thich Nhat Hanh, helped her cope with her infirmities.
Anne adored and was adored by her husband, children, and grandchildren.
We grieve her passing while treasuring our memories of her. She died at
home in Hospice care in the loving embrace of her husband and children.
We are grateful to her highly skilled and compassionate hospice nurses,
and to the home care workers of Cape Senior Home Healthcare. We are
deeply grateful also for the many sympathy cards from her friends in
Binghamton, NY, Cape Cod, MA and Vermont and for the heartfelt messages
expressed therein.
For those so inclined, donations in her name to Anne’s favorite
charities and righteous causes would be most welcome. These include
Doctors Without Borders, St.Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, Planned
Parenthood, Amnesty International, The Humane Society, The Nature and
Ocean Conservancies, Bill Mckibben’s “350” organization,or any other
sound environmental initiative.
