Jim Higginbotham, who homesteaded near Alexander, N.D., was killed in France Oct. 1. Jim left Alexander in 1915 and went to Australia where he enlisted in the British Army.

Carrie Higginbotham Walters (1901-2003) KY/NM/TX/OK/IN/MI/SD/ND
Carrie Walters, 101, Bismarck, died April 15, 2003, at her son's home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. EDT Tuesday at Bethel Apostolic Church, Buchanan, Mich. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Three Oaks, Mich.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m., with her son, the Rev. David Walters officiating.
Mrs. Walters was born Oct. 2, 1901, at Cable, Ky., the daughter of Joseph L. and Ona (Cook) Higginbotham, and has lived in several states. As a child, her family moved to New Mexico where she lived on the desert in an adobe house. Later, they moved to Texas, and then from Texas to Oklahoma in a covered wagon. She often commented that she had gone from ox carts to jet planes.
While living in the LaPorte, Ind., area she met and married Ernest Walters on Aug. 30, 1920. Before moving to Buchanan they lived in New Carlisle, Ind., Three Oaks and Galien, Mich.
Mrs. Walters lived in the Buchanan area for over 70 years. She made her home on Walnut Street for over 50 years, before moving to Millpond where she lived for a number of years.
Because of a date given during the 1920 census, she was told by the Social Security Administration that her birth-date was 1899. For many years this has been a topic of discussion and fun among her family and friends. In keeping with the information on Oct. 2, 1999, family and friends gathered at Bethel Apostolic Church in Buchanan, to be with her as she celebrated her "100th birthday". During this time while visiting in Buchanan for a few weeks, Mrs. Walters was able to be with all of her children and to be present at the dedication of one of many great-great-grandchildren. Five generations were present for the birthday and dedication celebrations. She went on to celebrate two more 100th birthdays with lots of fun and family; she loved a party. She loved life until the very last breath and just a few days before her passing she wrote a note of the sunshine and blue sky and the birds singing.
Because of failing health she moved to Aberdeen, S.D., to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Carl Thurston. For the past several years, she has divided her time between Aberdeen and Bismarck, and for the past year has made her home with her son in Bismarck.
She is survived by her two daughters and three sons, Barbara (Carl) Thurston, Aberdeen, Janiece (Marvin) Arnold, Utica, Mich., Charles R. (Ann) Walters, Byron, Ga., David O. (Atha) Walters, Bismarck, and Paul (Esther) Walters, Statesville, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Eva Skiles, South Bend, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Joyce Emily; her husband; her parents; and several brothers and sisters.

Stuart W. Higginbotham (1954-2009) CA/ND

Stuart W. Higginbotham, 55, Jamestown, ND passed away Tuesday evening December 29, 2009 in the comfort of his home at Jamestown after a long battle with cancer.
Stuart Higginbotham was born July 28, 1954 at Port Hueneme, CA, the son of Robert Higginbotham and Roberta (Stone) Higginbotham. He received his elementary education in Glendive, MT, Wapheton, ND and Benson, MN. He graduated from High School in Benson before attending Minnesota West Technical College from 1977 to 1980, where he majored in Agricultural and Consumer Banking.
He and Donna Johansen were married May 22, 1976 at Lake Benton, MN. In 1980 they moved to Valley City where he worked as a Loan Officer and Branch Manager at the First Community Credit Union until 1988. In 1989 they moved to Jamestown where he became Vice President of Operations and then Administration. They moved to Maddock, ND in 1997 and became President of the North Star Community Credit Union until 2003 when they returned to Jamestown where he served as President of the First Community Credit Union to the present time.
He was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Jamestown, ND, North Dakota Credit Union League Board, Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation Board, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, El Zagal Shriners, Eagles Aerie 2192, Valley City, ND, Elks Lodge No. 995, Ducks Unlimited, Blue Jay Boosters and the Jimmie Boosters.
Stuart was passionate about fishing and more fishing, hunting, watching movies, history films, golfing and all sports. He enjoyed listening to college marching band music. He especially enjoyed being a die-hard Vikings fan.
Surviving are his wife Donna, Jamestown, ND, 2 brothers and 1 sister, Curtis Higginbotham, Valley City, ND, Barry (Jackie) Higginbotham, Ft. Pierre, SD, Pam (Chad) Lentz, Barnesville, MN, his father, Bob Higginbotham, Valley City, ND and his mother Roberta ‘Betty' Gamache, Barnsville, MN.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday January 5, 2010 in the 1st United Methodist Church in Jamestown, ND with Rev. Michelle Brennan, officiating.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM Monday January 4, 2010 at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown, ND.
Visitation 9-8 Monday at the Funeral Home (body not present)

Robert L. Higginbotham (1931-2011) ND

Robert Higginbotham, 79, Moorhead, MN, formerly of Valley City, ND died Wednesday February 23, 2011 in Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. Robert Higginbotham was born September 4, 1931 at Jamestown, ND, the son of Albert C. Higginbotham and Marie (Metcalf) Higginbotham. He received his education at Valley City, ND and Graduated from Valley City High School in 1949. He graduated from Valley City State University in 1959 with a degree in Education. He entered the US Navy in 1952 as an Airman and served during the Korean War in Hawaii and California and was honorably discharged January 1956 in San Francisco, CA with the rank of AD3. He and Roberta Stone were married August 30, 1953 at Joplin, MO. After the military, he was a teacher and taught from 1960 until 1972 in Glendive, MT, Benson, MN and Wahpeton, ND. He then worked in sales until his retirement in Valley City, ND. He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City, ND. He was also a member of the American Legion. Surviving are his 3 children, Curtis Higginbotham, Barnesville, MN; Barry (Jackie) Higginbotham, Ft. Pierre, SD; Pam (Chad) Lentz, Barnesville, MN, 6 grandchildren and 1 sister, Betty Carter, Breckenridge, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Stuart, and 1 brother John. The memorial service will be at 11:00 AM Monday February 28, 2011 at the Lerud Peterson Funeral Chapel in Valley City, ND with Pastor Dan Bader, officiating. Interment will be in the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery in Mandan ND.

Roberta Ruth Stone Higginbotham Gamache (1930-2023) MO/MN/ND

Roberta "Betty" Ruth (Stone) Gamache, 92, Barnesville, MN, died Friday, March 31, surrounded by family in Sanford Health in Fargo.
Betty was born to Glen Stone and Ruth Place on November 30, 1930, in Joplin, MO. She graduated from high school in Monette, MO.
She married Robert L. Higginbotham in Joplin, MO, on August 30, 1953. They had four children; Stuart Higginbotham, Curtis Higginbotham, Barry Higginbotham, and Pamela (Lentz) Higginbotham. Through their 30-year marriage, they lived in Montana, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and ultimately settled in Robert's hometown of Valley City, ND.
Betty was a homemaker, worked at the Fair Store in Valley City, and was a home health aide for the elderly.
One of Betty's hobbies and business ventures was ceramics. Betty owned her own ceramic shops and enjoyed teaching ceramic classes.
Betty later married Arthur Gamache on June 13, 1992, in Fargo, ND. They were active members of Hope Lutheran Church for several years and enjoyed traveling and retired life.
Betty loved, more than anything in the world, being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Time with her family was her most cherished treasure. She had a tremendous outlook and always brought humor and a smile to those around her.
Betty is survived by her children, Curtis Higginbotham and girlfriend Anita Syring (Wahpeton, ND), Barry Higginbotham and wife Jackie (Ft Pierre, SD), Pamela Lentz and husband Chad (Pelican Rapids, MN); her grandchildren, Kevin Higginbotham, Tammy Higginbotham, Mathew Higginbotham, Ashley Higginbotham, Courtney John and husband Tanner John, Kaitlyn Lentz and her fiancé, Connor John; her older brother, Glen Stone (Oronogo, MO) and several nieces and nephews; and a great-grandson, Decker John.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur Gamache; her former spouse, Robert Higginbotham; her eldest son, Stuart Higginbotham; and sister, Peggy June Tabb.
The memorial service will be on Tuesday, April 11, at 11 AM. Visitation will be at 10 AM, with lunch to follow at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo.
