William Dickson Higginbotham (1826-1877) England, RI
A Husband Detected in Criminal Relations with His Stepdaughter - He Kills Himself
Providence, R.I., June 17 - About 6 o'clock this morning the body of William D. Higgenbotham was found in an outbuilding in the rear of No. 73 Summit street, where his family resides. IA week ago Thursday night his wife found him in bed with his step-daughter, a girl of fourteen years, and assured of criminal intercourse with her child ordered him out of the house. He left Monday and on Wednesday again appeared, and was again ordered away. He was not seen after by his wife until found dead. An inquest by Coroner Bishop developed the fact that Higginbotham first had criminal intercourse with the girl over a year ago, during the absence of his wife, and had repeated the deed several times since. The child was entirely innocent of the enormity of the crime. and said nothing of it until it was exposed as above. Higginbotham, after leaving the house, Monday went to Fall River, and returned some time Saturday night. His body was discovered by his wife. In his pocket were found two empty vials labeled respectively laudanum and strychnine, obtained, it is supposed, from McLaw, druggist in Warren, R.I. Higginbotham was fifty-one years of age, and was married to his present wife 12 years ago. His relations with his wife were always pleasant. The coroner's verdict is the the deceased came to his death by poison administered by his own hand.
