PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY

James Higginbotham Expires at his Home Northwest of Town Monday Afternoon-Long a Resident

James Higginbotham, living northwest of Eldora and a well known resident of this section of the county, died suddenly Monday afternoon at his home, death being due to heart trouble. Although Mr. Higginbotham had not in the best of health of late, nothing of a serious nature was thought of. A short time previous to the coming of the death messenger Mr. Higginbotham had been visiting with a number of callers at the farm, showing his friends his thoroughbred chickens, the growing of which he had made a specialty of for a number of years.

Mr. Higginbotham was born near Xenia, in Greene county, Ohio, July 25, 1841. Mr. Higginbotham came to Hardin county, Iowa, in 1856, making the trip from Ohio in a wagon over rough roads and across unbridged streams. He knew of the hardships incident to pioneer life, for with his hands he helped clear away the timber from large farms and to assist in developing this then practically unbroken land. In 1864 Mr. Higginbotham was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Rhodes, who with his four children-two sons and two daughters-survived him. The children are: A. E. Higginbotham of Kingsley, Iowa; Mrs. Richard Lawrence of Union; Mrs. Ezra A. Albertson of Aiden, and Harley Higginbotham who has always resided with his parents.

Mr. Higginbotham was a man of rugged honesty, a friend of the best possible government and a citizen whose life was worthy of emulation.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Christian church, the service being in charge of Rev. A. I. Martin. The burial was in Eldora cemetery.

The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) 3/13/1945

Geneva Belle Higginbotham Dodge (1906-1945) IA

Mother Of Five Killed By Elevator

Operator, 39, Caught Under Lowering Car

Mrs. Geneva Dodge, 39, of 1516 Tenth street SE, mother of five children, was killed shortly after noon Tuesday in an elevator accident at the Smulekoff building, Third avenue and First street SW.

An elevator operator for the Collins Radio company, which occupies the building, Mrs. Dodge was caught between the third floor and the bottom of the elevator.

Police said it had fallen on her, pinning her body against the third floor edge of the elevator shaft. No one witnessed the accident, according to police.

Dr. T. Frank Hersch, Linn county coroner, said he believed the death purely an accident and that no inquest would be necessary. Death, he said, was caused by the elevator's crushing Mrs. Dodge's abdomen.

The elevator, an old type, had been overhauled only two weeks ago, according to Edwin Filipi, foreman of the Collins company's carton department, housed in the building.

Car Controlled By Cable

The car is controlled by a cable running at the side of the shaft. In order to start the car, the operator reached through an opening in the side of the car and pulls on the cable. It is stopped by a mechanical control inside the car which clamps around the cable.

The car may be started from any floor, however, by anyone who reaches into the shaft and give the cable a pull.

Fellow workers said they had seen Mrs. Dodge return from lunch and take the car to the first floor balcony, where it is believed she left her coat.

Police Reconstruct Mishap

Police reasoned she then returned to the elevator and went up to the third floor, where she stepped out for some reason. On returning for the car and finding it had taken up she reached into the shaft, police theorize, and pulled on the cable to start it downward.

It is believed she slipped a few seconds later when she reached into the descending car to apply the mechanical stop. In doing so, she would have fallen feet forward into the shaft to be pinned by the descending car.

Worker Heard Jolt

Fellow workers heard the car jolt, looked into the shaft and saw Mrs. Dodge's feet dangling from the third floor. They raced upstairs and found the floor of the car pinned across her chest. She was lying face up, only her head and shoulders visible.

Mrs. Dodge was taken to St. Luke's hospital by Ambulance Service, but she lived only a few minutes after being released from the shaft.

Gates Guard Entrance

Entrances to the elevator shaft are protected by gates which run across the openings. The gates, however, consist only of three-inch boards about three feet off the floor.

It would be possible to slip beneath the board, or fall over it into the shaft.

In addition to her husband, George M. Dodge, Mrs. Dodge is survived by four daughters, Ilah, 19, of Omaha; Mrs. Donna McNulty, 17, at home; Dixie, 12, and Rita 3; a son, Dwight, 15; a sister, Mrs. Alice Lyons, 1542 Bever avenue SE, and a brother, Walter Higgenbottom, 408 Fourth avenue SE.

He was born in Des Moines on October 27, 1932, to Frank and Vernal (Burgess) Higginbottom. Richard grew up on the family farm near Elkhart and graduated from Farrar High School in 1949. In 1952, he enlisted in the US Army, trained as a specialist in the Signal Corps at San Luis Obispo, California and served with the 8034th in Tokyo during the Korean War. It was there that he began training in recreational weightlifting and body building.

Following his discharge, Richard returned to Polk County and took up farming with his dad while holding down a full-time supervisory position at the John Deere plant in Ankeny. He continued his weight training and bodybuilding programs under the supervision of Ben Sorenson, entering local and state competitions throughout the late 1950s and winning 3rd and 2nd place titles in the 1956 and 1957 Mr. Iowa Contests. On June 15, 1957, Richard married Darlene Stanfel and they made their newlywed home in Elkhart. By 1973, the Higginbottom farm operation had grown so large that Richard decided to retire from John Deere and devote himself to farming fulltime. Relaxation came in the way of annual, week-long fishing trips to Canada with his family and friends. In early 1993, Richard returned to weightlifting and by the fall had entered a local competition in the over 60 class, taking 1st place with a bench press of 325 lbs.
