Missouri Girl's Basketball Tournament, having scored over 70 points in one game.
In later years, she was an avid Portland Trailblazer fan, with a special

trading Clyde to the Houston Rockets. The announcement of their retiring his
jersey came the day after her death.
Later in 1930, one of her older brothers, Tom, rode the rails
looking for a new home for the family and they migrated west, settling on a farm

several locations as Boots was involved in various defense-related projects:
Hawthorne, NV, 1942; Tillamook, OR, 1943, and back to Portland, where their
second son, David V. Dirksen, was born in 1944. In 1949 they moved to Dallas,
TX. After a year they returned to Oregon, settling on a farm, now a part of
Dabney Park, on the Sandy River in the Springdale area. While there, Rene became
the substitute mail carrier for Route 1 out of the Troutdale Post Office.. The
route extended from Troutdale to Larch Mountain to the Columbia River and back

Donna Mae Miller Higginbotham (1935-2008) OR
Longtime public servant Donna Higginbotham dies
She served on the Central Point council for nearly 25 years
CENTRAL POINT — Donna Higginbotham, a councilwoman who saw Central Point through
more than a quarter-century of growth and brought humor into city politics, died
Sunday at age 73.
Friends and family remembered Higginbotham Tuesday as outspoken and deeply fond
of her community.
She died at an adult foster home after a prolonged, undiagnosed illness that
left her unable to communicate in her final days, family members said.
Higginbotham leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Orland Higginbotham, three
children and many grandchildren.
A City Council member for nearly 25 years during two separate stints,
Higginbotham first joined the council in 1980 and served more than a decade
during a time of slow growth and limited funding.
She left office in the mid-1990s when former mayor Rusty McGrath was elected and
things, she said later, became "a little controversial."
At age 56, she started college and was one of few grandmothers to graduate with
a criminology degree from then-Southern Oregon State College in 1991. She spent
more than eight years working for Jackson County's juvenile department, using a
tough-love approach with teens that prompted many of them to visit her in later
years.
In 1999, the then 65-year-old returned to city government during a period of
rapid growth and development. After supporting a citywide smoking ban,
Higginbotham was one of three council members to face a recall attempt by a
citizens group headed by McGrath, town hall critic Larry Thornton and
councilwoman Carol Fischer.
With her trademark sense of humor, Higginbotham said of surviving the recall
(with the most public support of the three): "We weren't scared of it or
anything."
She resigned in 2004, having suffered a series of small strokes. At the time she
listed her favorite accomplishments as passing the smoking ban, helping with
development of the new city library, working on the Bear Creek Greenway and
establishing a park in honor of former Mayor Don Jones.
The day she turned in her resignation, she learned one of her two sons, both of
whom would later die of cancer, had been diagnosed with the disease. Of her
resignation she said at the time, "I cried about it. ... I just couldn't stand
it, but it was time and I knew I should get off. Then the very day I went down
to tell them I was retiring, I found out about my son."
Higginbotham's daughter, Julie Webster of Williams, said her mother was known by
many as one who "never had a qualm about telling it like it was" and would be
"sorely missed."
Kay Harrison, who served for a time with Higginbotham, called her a "genuinely
nice person that really cared about her community and her family.
"There are feisty people that are argumentative just so they can stir stuff up,
but that wasn't Donna," Harrison said. "She had an opinion and she just stuck to
it and she did it in a way that was "¦ just good, never mean-spirited."
Former Mayor Bill Walton remembered Higginbotham, with whom he attended high
school, as a "dear, dear person."
Of her mother's humor, Webster recalled a time when out-of-towners were about to
visit the family, then living in the Applegate, and ignorantly inquired about
the modern amenities in the family's home.
"They asked if we had electricity and phone service and she politely answered,
'Oh yes. We've got all the amenities "¦ and by golly Indian raids are down to
once a week!' "
Webster said her mother loved the ocean. The family plans to scatter her ashes
this summer along the beaches she often walked with her husband. No public
service is planned. Arrangements are being handled by Stephens Family Chapel in
Grants Pass.

Donald Dean Higinbotham (1922-2010) OR
November 7, 1922 - August 15, 2010
Donald Dean Higinbotham was born in Central Point, Ore., to Oscar and Mildred
(Patton) Higinbotham, and passed away in Grants Pass, Ore., just 84 days before
his 88th birthday. Dean was from a long line of early pioneers to southern
Oregon including the Higinbotham, Patton, McKee, and Edmondson families. Dean's
early education included schools in Central Point, Butte Falls, Prospect, Malin,
Klamath Falls, Medford, and Sedro Wooley, Washington. During his high school
years in Medford, Dean worked at Bigelow's fountain as a "soda jerk" and later
delivered telegrams all over the Medford area on his Schwinn bicycle for the
Postal Telegraph Company. He graduated from Medford High in 1940. After some
post graduate studies at Sacramento Junior College, Dean went to work for
Lockheed Aircraft Company in Long Beach, Calif. Shortly after the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor, Dean enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. After cadet
training and extensive automatic pilot and glide bombing instruction, he became
the B29 auto pilot and Norden bombsite administrator for Army air fields at
Clovis, N.M., Amarillo, Texas and Albuquerque, N.M., overseeing the maintenance
and issue of the Norden bombsite for the Air Force fleet of B29 bombers. Dean
graduated from Oregon State College in June 1950, with a bachelor of science
degree in forestry. Immediately, on June 14, 1950, he went to work for the
Weyerhaeuser Company at the Coos Bay branch, where he was in charge of fire
control, reforestation, forest management and ultimately as area raw materials
manager. He held a restricted radio telephone permit issued by the Federal
Communications Commission and served as a Coos County Deputy Sheriff. He is a
past chairman of the Colombia River section of the Society of American
Foresters, past president of the Coos chapter of the Isaac Walton League, a
member of the Coos Bay Methodist Church, a former Toastmaster, and for many
years, active in the Coos County United Good Neighbors campaign. In 1967, Dean
transferred to the Weyerhaeuser corporate headquarters in Tacoma, Wash.,
retiring at the end of 1977, as a vice president of the company. After
retirement, Dean returned to southern Oregon to live out his life in Grants
Pass. Here, Dean became a consultant for the Josephine County forestry
department, helping direct their timber sales and reforestation program. During
his last 32 years, Dean spent an enormous amount of time researching and
documenting the genealogy of his ancestors and many other of the pioneer
families of southern Oregon, even confirming the Roxy Ann (the butte) was named
for his great-great-grandmother. He produced and presented genealogy books to
all members of his immediate family and at least 10 volumes to the Southern
Oregon Historical Society. Dean had become one of the most thorough and reliable
sources of genealogical information and perhaps the foremost authority on
genealogy in southern Oregon. Dean was a lifetime member of Blanco Lodge of Coos
Bay and Grants Pass Masonic Lodge AF & AM. He was also a life member of York
Rite Bodies Reemers chapter #28 Royal Arch Masons, Rogue Council #23 Cryptic
Masons, Melita Commandry #8 and also a member of Hillah Shrine Temple. Dean's

Grandchildren and 15 Great Great Grandchildren.
Her family lived in several places from Colton to Cottage Grove and finally
settling in Pleasant Hill till the last one graduated, then to the Dexter
property where so many gatherings happened over her last few decades.
Sally spent several summers with the kids camping on the logging sites where
Shorty worked, where the kids went on adventures and worked to earn money for
school clothes.
Sally had several hobbies; she was an Artist, doing several oil paintings and a
wall mural. She decorated cakes including several wedding cakes. She also kept
the family history organized through pictures.
After raising her family she went on to be the first in the family to graduate
from college with a BS Degree from the University of Oregon. Then after College
she went on to be a Recreational Director at the Kaufman Senior Center.
In her retirement Sally and her beloved friend Mickie took their grandkids
camping for 2 weeks every summer at the Marsh in Klamath Falls. On one trip they
had 18 kids at the same time. Her road to fame was acknowledged in the Register
Guard for her "Camp Grandma" adventures. Also, we all remember the yearly
Gingerbread houses she arranged for anyone who wanted to come out and decorate.
In her travels she took the entire family (7 kids) to Yellowstone and then
Disneyland. She traveled around the Northwest and went to Mexico with her
daughters. She also traveled all around Mexico for several winters with Shorty
then traveled to Alaska and Canada. Her last trip was all the way across the US
with her daughter Sherry for over 6 months hitting 33 States.
When Sally wasn't camping or traveling, she could be found out in the yard
pulling weeds, edging the lawn with her bare hands, sanding, painting or washing
off the deck. If she wasn't dirty she wasn't having fun.
Sally lived a full life! We were all her favorites and we would have to write a
book to tell all of her amazing adventures.
She will always be with us in our memories.
The family will be having a Celebration of Life for Sally at the Dexter property
June 7th
