Melinda Lyon Hickenbotham

Died at the home of her son, James E. Hickenbotham on Christmas
day at 8:30
a.m., Melinda Hickenbotham, aged 88 years, 4 months, and 7 days. Funeral will
be held from the Congregational church on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Interment will be made at Riverside cemetery.
Melinda Lyon was born at New Haven, Oswego county, New York, on August 18, 1827,
her parents being Rueben and Hannah Lyon.
On January 24, 1847, nearly sixty-nine years ago, she was united in marriage to
Samuel F. Hickenbotham, at New Hartford, Oneida county, New York. Starting for
the west that same year, they landed in Sheboygan, Wis., on September 12, 1847,
taking up a preemption for the government. Upon this land they lived until the
death of her husband in September, 1902. Twelve children were born to this
union, nine of whom are still living. She also leaves thirty-four grandchildren
and eighteen great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Nancy E. Johnson of Thurman,
Ia., aged 87 years, also survives her.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 2:30 o'clock at the Congregational
church, the procession leaving the Moore undertaking parlors at 2:15.

Bernard J. Hickenbotham (1940-2009) SD
SPEARFISH - Bernard J. "Bernie" Hickenbotham, 69, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at his home with his wife by his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 8, 1940 in Winner and adopted by his parents, Maurice and Rosemary Hickenbotham. He grew up in Dupree and graduated from Dupree High School in 1958. He was a former Law Enforcement officer and retired from education as a teacher and administrator. Bernie taught at Flandreau Indian School for one year, Little Wound School in Kyle for eight years, and Takini School for 13 years. He retired to his country place in Spearfish in 2002. He leaves his wife Micheline and his daughter, Lynne (Cameron) Larson, all of Spearfish; his son, John Hickenbotham, Beulah, WY; his daughter, Teresa Hickenbotham, New York City, NY; stepson Alan (Jessica) Demaret, Green River, WY; grandchildren, Savannah Larson, Spearfish, and Addison and Jake Demaret, Green River; one sister, Loretta (Ken) Engelhardt, Sedona, AZ; and numerous cousins, uncle, aunt, nephews and nieces to remember his life and passing. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 22 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish, followed by a luncheon. His body will be cremated and a private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hospice of the Northern Hills, Lawrence County Relay For Life and the Spearfish Rifle and Trap Club. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Aldinger Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Spearfish.
