Mrs. Louise Ward Higginbotham died at the home of her son-in-law, D. H. Peery, January 8. She was born in Virginia in 1808 and had lived in Ogden since 1886.

Simon S. Higginbotham died at his home in Ogden Sunday of intestinal infection. He was born in Virginia in 1839 and came to Utah in 1846. He was a long-time resident of Ogden, engaged in business enterprises.

Mary Elizabeth Shupe Higginbotham (1848-1910) IA/UT

Injuries received by falling on the ice while crossing Ogden River six weeks ago caused the death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Higginbotham Saturday morning at her home in Ogden. Mrs. Higginbotham was born in Iowa in 1848, and crossed the plain in one of the hard cart companies.

Kathryne L. Higginbotham, administratrix of the estate of Mary. E. Higginbotham, deceased, has commenced suit against Eugene Higginbotham to recover $00 and interest, alleged to be due on a certain promissory note said to have been issued April 3, 1905. Mrs. Higginbotham was appointed special administratrix for the purposes of the suit. Mrs. Mary E. Higginbotham died March 19, 1910.

Ireta Higginbotham (1892-1910) UT

Miss Ireta Higginbotham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Higginbotham, Jr., died at the family residence at 6 o'clock last evening. She had been a victim of heart failure for the past ten years. She was born in this city on Jan. 15, 1892.

During her life she had been a prominent church worker and was a student at Weber Academy. She was identified with church work in the Fifth Ward and was a member of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association.

Funeral services will be held at the Fifth Ward meeting house at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Bishop H. C. Jacobs.

The remains may be viewed at the family home, 1426 Twenty-fifth Street, Saturday afternoon and Sunday up to 12 o'clock noon. Interment will be made in the Ogden City Cemetery.

Francis David Higginbotham Sr. (1848-1911) UT

Francis David Higginbotham, Sr. aged 63 years, a pioneer merchant of Utah, scion of a large family, many members of which are prominent in this state, died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Louise M. Woodman, 151 Seventh East street, Salt Lake, as a result of heart trouble induced by a recent attack of pneumonia. Mr. Higginbotham has been ill with pneumonia for the past six weeks and it was believed that he had entirely recovered from the sickness.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the residence of Mrs. Woodman. The body will be brought to Ogden the same day on the 12 o'clock noon train, and Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock funeral services will be held in the Fourth ward meeting house at Ogden. Interment will be in the Ogden City cemetery,
Mr. Higginbotham is survived by a widow, Elizabeth; sons and daughters, Frank D., Jr., Mrs. Louisa M. Woodman and Letitia Thornberg, all of Salt Lake; Simon H. of Preston, Ida.; Earl E. of Salt Lake; Mrs. Rosalia Moore of Los Angeles, Cal. There is one sister survivor, Mrs. D. M. Peery of Ogden, and fourteen grandchildren.
Mr. Higginbotham was born in Nauvoo, Ill., March 24, 1848, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William T. Higginbotham, were staunch members of the Mormon church in the early days. While Mr. Higginbotham was still a young man, his parents and their four children, Nancy, Simon S., Elizabeth, Letitia and himself, removed to Burkes Garden, Va.
It was there that Nancy Higginbotham met and married David H. Peery, whom she converted to the Mormon faith. William E. Higginbotham and Mrs. David H. Peery died during the sojourn of the family in Burkes Garden. Shortly afterward, Mrs. Louise Ward Higginbotham, the elder, and her three children moved westward across the plains, arriving in this valley with the later pioneers who followed Brigham Young, in the year 1864. David H. Peery came with them and married his former wife's sister, Elizabeth Letitia, one year later.
During the pilgrimage of the party across the plains, frequent attacks by Indians were met and repulsed. Mr. Higginbotham displayed unusual courage and undertaking, earning the confidence and love of all. In 1868, after his arrival in Utah, Mr. Higginbotham married Elizabeth A. Rawson, Daughter of Daniel H. Rawson, one of the original band of pioneers, who distinguished himself as a member of the Mormon battalion. The marriage took place in Ogden, where the Higginbotham family had taken up residence after visiting in Provo and the small village of Cottonwood, respectively.
Mr. Higginbotham was a leading merchant of Ogden in the days when that city was changing from a small town to a ....city. He was associated closely with his brother-in-law, David H. Peery, one of the most prominent business men of Ogden, during his life. Mrs. Elizabeth Letitia Peery is the mother of Henry, Joseph, Horace, Harold Peery and Mrs. Louise Patterson of Chicago, Frank, Lewis, and Harmon Peery and two infant daughters, now dead.

HIGGINBOTHAM — Funeral services for Frankie Higginbotham, 7-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Higginbotham, formerly of this city, will be held Tuesday afternoon at the grave in the City cemetery. The child died at the family residence, in Salt Lake of leakage of the heart.

HIGGINBOTHAM BABY TO BE BURIED TODAY

Funeral services for Frances Dee Higginbotham, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Higginbotham, who died Thursday at the residence of her parents, 664 Third avenue, will be held this afternoon at 12:30 o'clock at the grave in the Ogden City cemetery.

The little girl succumbed to spinal meningitis after an illness of three weeks. The body will be taken to Ogden this morning by a special car over the Bamberger line, leaving Salt Lake at 10:15 o'clock.

Ada Margaretta Higginbotham (1916-1918) UT

The funeral of Ada Higginbotham, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Higginbotham, was held yesterday at 11 o'clock at the home, 1014 Washington avenue, with Bishop W. W. Rawson presiding. Solos "Come Ye Disconsolate" and "That Sweet Story of Old" were sung by Mrs. Emily Maddock. The speakers were Judge George S. Barker, Patriarch George W. Larkins and Bishop Rawson. The interment was in the Ogden city cemetery.

Lester Jefferson Higginbotham (1875-1919) UT

L. J. Higginbotham Suddenly Called by Death

Lester J. Higginbotham, 778 Twenty-first street, was suddenly stricken with illness at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon while at his work as manager of the Model laundry. After he had been taken ill he was rushed to the office of Dr. Joseph R. Morrell in the Eccles building where he passed away at 4:15 o’clock. The cause of death was angina pectoris.

The deceased, who is well known in Ogden, is survived by his wife, Laura Jacobson Higginbotham, and the following children: Elmer L., Edna, Carl C., Florence and Helen; by his mother, Mrs. Margaretta Higginbotham, and the following brothers: Simon S., Frank E., John L., Joseph S., David R. and Thomas C. Higginbotham.

For a number of years Mr. Higginbotham was connected with the Peery Milling company at Preston, Idaho, and also at Ogden. He resigned from his position with that company last summer to engage in the laundry business with his brothers.

When Mr. Higginbotham arose yesterday morning he appeared to his family to be in the best of health and spirits. He returned home for lunch and ate heartily, departing in his usual cheerful spirit. At 2:30 he was suddenly stricken with an illness of a grave character. He was hurried to a doctor’s office where he continued to sink until death came shortly before 5 o’clock.

The funeral services will be held in the Larkin chapel Wednesday at 2 o’clock, Bishop E. A. Olsen officiating. The Woodmen of the World of which the deceased was a member will conduct their service at the grave. The body will lie in state this evening and tomorrow until the time of services at the Larkin chapel. Interment Ogden city cemetery.

HIGGINBOTHAM—The funeral of Max F. Higginbotham was held yesterday at the Seventh ward chapel. Bishop William Arthur Budge presided. Miss Florence Jones, Mrs. Artie S. Blakeley and Mrs. Melba Head Jones sang. Speakers included R A. Larkin, Bishop Miles L. Jones and Bishop Budge. Interment was in the city cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth Higginbotham Cortez (1869-1924) UT

Mrs. Mary E. Cortez, wife of William F. Cortez, died at 9 o’clock Monday evening at the family residence, after an illness of seven weeks. Mrs. Cortez was born in Ogden, October 2, 1869, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Shupe Higginbotham. She was married in Ogden, February 22, 1895. She was a member of the religion class board for many years and was active in all works for the L.D.S. church. She is survived by a son, Hensley, and a daughter, Dorothy Cortez, students at Weber college. Also the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. F. B. Pattee, Oakland, Calif.; Eugene Higginbotham, Buhl, Ida.; Katherine Higginbotham, Ogden; Mrs. J. J. Rossiter, Sparks, Nev.; Mrs. A. S. Hawks, Farnum, Idaho; Mrs. G. E. Myers, Los Angeles; Orland Higginbotham, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock in the Fourth ward meeting house, with Bishop H. E. Lund presiding. The body may be viewed Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until time of services at the family home, 2112 Adams avenue. Interment will be made in the City cemetery under the direction of Lindquist undertakers.

Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham (1846-1927) UT

Mrs. Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham, Utah pioneer, died Sunday at her home, 430 Thirteenth street, after having been an invalid for the last seven years.

Mrs. Higginbotham was born in Carroll County, Kentucky, May 7, 1846, and crossed the plains with her parents, Frances and Sarah Easterday, in 1864. She became a member of the latter Day Saints in 1865 and since that time had been an ardent worker in the church. She went to Nevada in 1865 and was married to Simon S. Higginbotham in Austin on April 4 of the same year. In 1866 she came to Ogden and had since made her home here. Mr. Higginbotham died in 1889. Mrs. Higginbotham was a member of the Seventh ward Relief Society.

She was the mother of eight sons, of whom the following six, all residents of Ogden, are living: Simon S., Francis S., John L., Joseph S., David R. and Thomas C. Higginbotham. The deceased sons are Lester J. Higginbotham and James H. Higginbotham, both of Ogden. A brother, John D. Easterday, and a sister, Lucy E. Blake, both of San Jose, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Seventh ward chapel with Bishop W. A. Budge presiding. The body may be viewed at the home. Arrangements are in charge of Larkin & Sons.

Services for Mrs. Margaretta E. Higginbotham were held on Tuesday afternoon in the Seventh ward chapel with Bishop William Arthur Budge presiding. Six grandsons of Mrs. Higginbotham acted as pallbearers and members of the Relief society took charge of the flowers. Joseph P. Fernelius sang "O My Father" and "I Need Thee Every Hour." Mrs. Bertha Luddington and Mrs. Emma Gilgen sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "The Pioneer." Speakers were Andrew Wilson, Joseph S. Peery of Salt Lake, Bishop Budge and Albert E. Read. Interment was made in the Ogden City cemetery and the grave dedicated by Asael Farr.

Joseph Smith Higginbotham (1873-1931) UT

Joseph Smith Higginbotham, 58, Ogden businessman, died at the family residence, 823 Twenty-sixth Street, at an early hour this morning unexpectedly of heart failure. He was born in Ogden May 18, 1873, a son of Simon S. and Margarete Easterday Higginbotham. He married Elvera Ohlsen. He was active in the laundry business and other enterprises in Ogden.

He is survived by his widow, one son, J. Leslie Higginbotham and two daughters, Mrs. George Oxnam and Beverly Higginbotham, and one grandchild, all of Ogden; also the following brothers, all of Ogden: Simon S., Frank E., John L., David R., and Thomas C. Higginbotham.

Services will be held at 3 o’clock Sunday in the Fifth ward with Bishop Austin Shaw officiating. Friends may call at the Malan funeral home Friday evening and at the Higginbotham home, 823 Twenty-sixth street, Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday until the time of funeral. Burial will be in the City cemetery.

Elvera Vilate Ohlson Higginbotham (1878-1931) UT

Mrs. Elvera Ohlson Higginbotham, 53, died Sunday at the family home, 823 Twenty-sixth street, following an illness of six years. She was born July 16, 1878, a daughter of Gustave and Anna Mortensen Ohlson. Mr. Higginbotham died one month ago.

Surviving are one son and two daughters, J. Leslie Higginbotham, Mrs. George C. Oxnam and Beverly Higginbotham, all of Ogden, and one grandchild. One sister, Mrs. Evelyn Friese, of Ogden, also survives.

Services will be held Tuesday evening at 6 o’clock in the Fifth ward chapel with Bishop Austin H. Shaw presiding. The body may be viewed at the home this afternoon and evening and Tuesday until hour of services. Interment will be made in the Ogden City cemetery under the direction of the Malan funeral home.

John Higinbotham Jr. (1851-1932) IN/UT

John Higginbotham, 80, retired grain dealer, died Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. of cerebral hemorrage at the residence of his daughter. Mrs. A. A. Rathbun 1383 Laird avenue. He was born in Connersvillee, Ind., October 22, 1851, and had lived In Boise, Idaho until about fourteen months ago, when he came to Salt Lake, Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ellen Higginbotham; two daughters: Mrs. A. A. Rathbun and Mrs. Charles A. Garside of Las Vegas; one son: Walter S. Higginbotham, Lake Charles, La. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Hall-Ricketts mortuary, 544 East First South street, under the direction at the Rev. Theodore G. Lilley. Interment will take place in the Mount Olivet cemetery.

Louise Higginbotham (1904-1933) UT

Injured when the steeling gear of the automobile in which she was riding broke, Louise Higginbotham, 29, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Higginbotham, 378 Fifth avenue, died Monday at 3:30 a.m. in a Provo hospital, where she was taken after the machine plunged over an embankment  in Provo canyon early Sunday morning.

Death was caused by several fractured ribs, a punctured right lung, hemorrhages and shock. When Miss Higginbotham was taken to the hospital, her condition was not considered critical, but later she lapsed into unconsciousness.

The fatal accident occurred two miles above the Utah count line near the Deer Creek crossing on the Provo canyon road. The driver, said to be A. R. Shelton, 24, North First West street, Provo, but gave his name as Andrew Norton, lost control of the machine when the steering gear fouled, and the car plunged over a 50-foot embankment.

The driver and two other passengers, Edwin Peay of Provo and a woman who gave her name as Virginia Purrew of Springville, escaped with cuts and bruises.

The accident was investigated by Sheriff Virgil Fraughton of Wasatch county and Sheriff E. G. Durnell of Utah county, who reported no inquest will be held unless further investigation is demanded by the victim’s parents.

Miss Higginbotham was born in Salt Lake, December 21, 1904, and had lived here all her life. She left the city a few weeks ago to visit her aunt, Mrs. Ella Kerr of Payson.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Larkin mortuary. Burial will follow in the City cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Rawson Higginbotham (1853-1936) UT

Salt Lake City, May 13-Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Rawson Higginbotham, who was born in Ogden February 3, 1853, will be held Sunday at the Wells L.D.S. ward chapel here.

Mrs. Higginbotham, active in the church despite her 83 years, died Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lettie Thornberg, of complications due to age. Bishop J. Francis Sheffield will officiate at the last rites. Burial will be in Ogden City cemetery.

Elizabeth Letitia Higginbotham Peery (1846-1938) IL/UT

Mrs. David H. Peery, 92, mother of Mayor Harman W. Peery, died shortly before ten a.m. today at her home, No. 1 Peery apartments, following a heart attack which developed Sunday after she had contacted a cold.

Members of her family, who had been called from the west coast and who were expected to arrive here tonight are Harold J. Peery, a son, and Mrs. Horace E. Peery, a daughter-in-law, both of San Francisco. Mrs. Elizabeth Fulkerson, Dahl and Taylor Peery, grandchildren of Mrs. Peery, arrived from San Mateo, Calif., Monday; and Mrs. Mariah Parr Taylor of Salt Lake City, mother of Mrs. Horace Peery, also had been summoned.

Survivors include Mayor Peery, Harold J. Peery, Joseph S. Peery of Salt Lake City, and Louis H. Peery of Ogden, all her children; eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at two p.m. in the L.D.S. Second ward chapel by Bishop Frank C. Simmons. Friends may call at the residence of Mrs. Peery, 2481 Adams, Thursday afternoon and evening, and Friday until hour of service. Interment will be in the family plot, at the side of the grave of the late David H. Peery, in Ogden city cemetery, under direction of Lindquist & Sons.

Mrs. Peery, one of the best-loved characters in Ogden, came her in 1864. She was widely known for her charities among the poor and bereaved. Literally hundreds of families had been given the use of Mrs. Peery’s automobile which she often furnished for funeral services. One of the oldest members of the Second ward, she had always been a liberal supporter of the L.D.S. church.

Elizabeth Letitia Higginbotham Peery was born in Nauvoo, Illinois, to William E. and Louisa Ward Higginbotham, January 13, 1846.

Because of Mormon persecutions, the family several years later returned to Virginia, their native state, and settled at Burke’s Garden, where Mrs. Peery spent her childhood.

Her sister, Nancy, married David H. Peery in 1852. After her death in 1862, and the death of her father during the Civil War, the Higginbotham family, headed by the widowed mother, decided to settle in Utah. David H. Peery was included in the small party of pioneers which headed west in 1864.

The trip was a hazardous one, and the Mormon band was molested by robbers in the Kentucky hills, and again by Indians during the three-month trek across the plains from Omaha to the Salt Lake valley. The party arrived in Salt Lake in September of that year, and the Higginbotham’s first settled near Provo. Later they moved to Cottonwood, south of Salt Lake, where Elizabeth Higginbotham and David H. Peery were married April 10, 1865.

A year later they were again married in a ceremony in the Salt Lake endowment house. They moved to Ogden in 1866 and lived in an adobe house on Twenty-seventh and Washington. After they had moved several times, Mr. Peery built the Virginia, at Adams and Twenty-fourth, a famous mansion that was visited by such personages as Brigham Young and William Jennings Bryan. Mr. Peery, who was a banker and realtor and one-time mayor of Ogden, died in 1901. Of their eight children, four are living.

Mrs. Peery took an apartment in the Peery apartments in 1917, where she had lived since. She also spent a great deal of time at her summer home in Ogden canyon.

David Reese Higginbotham (1883-1940) UT

David R. Higginbotham, 56, of 350 ½ Twenty-fifth, Ogden, engaged in the laundry business here for many years, became Utah’s fifteenth traffic victim of the year Friday night when struck by an Ogden automobile one-half mile north of the Farmington junction on US highway 91, according to a report of Reed Oviatt, Davis county under-sheriff. Higginbotham was walking towards Ogden in the center of the highway, a short distance north of the E.R.A. camp in Farmington, and was hit by a southbound car driven by Len Larson, 23, of 114 Twenty-first.

The officer said Mr. Larson reported he stopped the machine as quickly as possible, placed the injured man in the car, and rushed him to a Salt Lake City hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The body was reported badly crushed.

Mr. Larson said today he was passing another machine, also southbound, at a speed of about 40 miles an hour. He said it was raining hard and he was unable to see the pedestrian until the moment of the impact. He was not arrested.

Mr. Higginbotham had been living with a brother, John L. Higginbotham, at 250 ½ Twenty-fifth, for the past four years, and since January 10 of this year had been employed at the Farmington E.R.A. camp as a caretaker. His brother said David had informed two or three days ago he would visit him Friday or Saturday, and apparently was on his way to Ogden at the time of the accident.

David R. and John L. Higginbotham and their five other brothers built the Model laundry, 2155 Pingree, in 1916, and operated the laundry from that time until 1930. Since that time David Higginbotham has been prospecting for ore in Utah and Idaho and other parts of the west. The two had lived together since 1927. The dead man had never married, according to his brother.

Mr. Higginbotham’s death was the second traffic fatality in Davis county in as many days, and the fifth for that county this year.

Riding with Mr. Larson in the car were Oliver Larson and Gladys Larson, of 224 Twenty-first; George Williams of 1961 Washington and Lavon Hancock of 2380 Iowa.

Mr. Higginbotham was born December 16, 1883, in Ogden, a son of Simon Shelby and Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham. Surviving are the following brothers: Frank E. Higginbotham, Salt Lake City; John L. and Thomas Higginbotham, Ogden; and Simon Higginbotham, Los Angeles.

Services will be conducted Sunday at three p.m. in Larkin & Sons funeral chapel by President William A. Budge of Ogden stake. Friends may call at the chapel this evening and Sunday until time of services. Interment will be in Ogden City cemetery.

John Logan Higginbottom (1882-1940) OH/UT

Mary Olsen Higginbottom (1902-1940) UT

Kaysville, June 17-Shotgun blasts snuffed out the lives of a father and mother in Kaysville early today without awakening their three children sleeping nearby.

Sheriff Joseph Holbrook reported John Logan Higginbottom, 57, Union Pacific station agent at Kaysville, and his wife, Mrs. Mary O. Higginbottom, 37, were found dead in bed this morning, each shot through the heart with a .410 shotgun.

Sheriff Holbrook said apparently Mrs. Higginbottom, who had been ill several months, shot her husband and then shot herself. However, a coroner’s jury was to come to Ogden today for an examination of powder marks on Mr. Higginbottom’s body in an effort to determine whether he shot his wife, and marks on Mrs. Higginbottom’s body.

The gun was found across Mrs. Higginbottom’s feet, said the sheriff. The inquest was being conducted under direction of Davis County Attorney Calvin Hampton and Justice of the Peace Wendell Barnes of Kaysville.

The children, John, 16, Owena, 15, and Marion, 12, were sleeping outside, it was reported, and did not hear the shots. Marion discovered the bodies about seven a.m. and ran to a doctor’s home a half block away.

Sheriff Holbrook said indications were that Mrs. Higginbottom shot her husband while he slept and then placed the gun against the foot of the bed, aimed at her own heart and pilled the trigger.

John Logan Higginbottom was born Oct. 2, 1882, at Bidwell, Ohio. He had been employed by the Union Pacific for many years and had been station agent at Kaysville for the past 10 years. He formerly resided at Pocatello, Idaho.

He was married to Mary Olsen at Logan 17 years ago.

Besides his three children, survivors of Mrs. Higginbottom include her mother, Mrs. Joseph E. Olsen of Brigham City; nine brothers and sisters, Mrs. Joseph S. Whittaker and J. R. Services for John Logan Higginbottom and his wife, Mary Olsen Higginbottom, were conducted Thursday in Larkin & Sons chapel by Bishop Hubert Burton of the Kaysville L.D.S. ward.

Musical selections were given by Mr. and Mrs. Kent Johnson, Mrs. Alberta Blaymeyer, Harold B. Felt and George F. Larkin. The invocation was offered by President Harold Holt and the benediction pronounced by James Criddle. Speakers were President Clifford Stong and Bishop Burton. Interment was in Brigham City cemetery. The grave of Mr. Higginbottom was dedicated by Bishop Burton, and the grave of Mrs. Higginbottom by Bishop Hansen. Pallbearers for Mr. Higginbottom were members of the Kaysville Rotary club and those for Mrs. Higginbottom were relatives and close friends of the family. Members of the Kaysville ward Relief society were in charge of the flowers.

Mr. Higginbotham was born April 18, 1881, in Ogden, a son of Francis D. and Elizabeth Rawson Higginbotham.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Leah Higginbotham; two brothers, Francis D. and Earl E. Higginbotham of Salt Lake City, and a sister, Mrs. Lettie Thornberg of Los Angeles.

Francis David Higginbotham (1869-1941) UT

Francis David Higginbotham, 72, manager of the John E. Dooly estate for many years and prominent figure in western mining circles, died Tuesday morning at his home, 862 East Twenty-first South street, of cardiac asthma.

Mr. Higginbotham was born in Harrisville, Weber county, June 6, 1869, a son of Francis D. and Elizabeth Rawson Higginbotham.

Mr. Higginbotham spent the early part of his life in Ogden. He was former Weber county deputy recorder, clerk and sheriff, and had served as a federal district court clerk in Ogden.

Later he was connected with the construction industry, building canals in Alberta, Canada, and in south central Idaho, and railroads in Montana, Idaho, Nevada and California.

Mr. Higginbotham was employed by the late John E. Dooly on May 1, 1911, and since had been connected with the John E. Dooly company in Salt Lake City, for many years the manager of the Dooly estate.

Recently he was elected to his second term as president of the Building Owners and Managers association, and in addition was secretary of the Capitol Hill Mining company and secretary-treasurer of both the Syndicate Investment company and the Utah Central Mine company.

Long active in the L.D.S church affairs, he was ordained first bishop of the Wells L.D.S. ward in Salt Lake City on June 27, 1919, holding this position until June 22, 1932. On September 18, 1932, he was ordained a patriarch of the Wells L.D.S. stake.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Geneva Marsh Higginbotham, whom he married May 8, 1880, in the Logan L.D.S. temple; four sons, Leon C. Higginbotham of Long Beach, Cal., David H. and William A. Higginbotham of Salt Lake City, Daniel H. Higginbotham of Phoenix, Ariz; three daughters, Mrs. Golden Haight, Mrs. Elias L. Woodbury and Mrs. Elmo Peterson of Salt Lake City; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Elias Earl Higginbotham of Salt Lake City, and a sister, Mrs. Letitia Thornberg of Hollywood, Cal.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday noon in the Wells L.D.S. ward chapel, 1990 Fifth East street, by Arnold Herlin, bishop of the Columbus ward. Burial will be in Ogden City cemetery.

Friends may call at 35 East Seventh South street Wednesday and Thursday and at the family residence from 10 a.m. Friday until time of services.

Elias Earl Higginbotham (1890-1941) UT

Elias Earl Higginbotham, 51, of 1502 South West Temple street, died Sunday at 2:50 p.m. at his residence, of sarcoma.

He was born on March 11, 1890, in Ogden, a son of Frank D. and Elizabeth Ann Rawson Higginbotham, and prior to coming to Salt Lake City in 1925, he had resided in Long Beach, Cal. For the past several years he had been an elevator operator in the Dooly building.

He was a member of the L.D.S. church, and in 1908 served on a mission to the eastern states.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Fullmer Higginbotham; three sons, Eugene Earl Higginbotham of Salt Lake City, Lewis V. Higginbotham of Corpus Christi, Texas and Douglas Higginbotham of Los Angeles, Cal.; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah E. Clymer and Virginia Higginbotham of Long Beach, Cal.; also three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Letitia Thornberg of Los Angeles and Mrs. L. E. Moore of Berkeley, Cal.

John L. Higginbotham, 70, of 358 Twenty-fifth, died at two-thirty a. m. today in a local hospital after a few days illness.

Mr. Higginbotham was born in Ogden, Feb. 14, 1872, a son of Simon and Margaret Easterday Higginbotham. He was a member of the L. D. S. church and was for many years foreman of the Model laundry.

Surviving are three brothers, Samuel Higginbotham, Los Angeles; Frank Higginbotham, Salt Lake City, and Thomas Higginbotham, Ogden.

The body is at Larkin & Sons' mortuary.

Services for John L. Higginbotham, 70, of 358 Twenty-fifth, will be conducted in Larkin & Sons' funeral chapel by President William A. Budge.

Friends may call Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday until one p.m. at the home of a brother, Thomas C. Higginbotham, 1521 Kiesel. Interment will be in Ogden City Cemetery.

Mrs. Ada M. Higginbotham, 68, wife of Simon S. Higginbotham, died at their home in El Monte, Calif., of a heart attack at six-thirty p.m. Sunday.

She was born in Ogden, Nov. 25, 1875, a daughter of Theodore A. and Ama D. Smith. She married Simon S. Higginbotham Dec. 4, 1903, and they made their home here until March, 1931.

Surviving are her husband and six sons and daughters, Mrs. Thelma Roof, of Hollywood; Mrs. Lola Emmons, of El Monte; Mrs. LaVonne Simmons, of Ogden; Lawrence L. Higginbotham, of Los Angeles; William E. Higginbotham, of El Monte, and S. Louis Higginbotham, in training at Farragut, Idaho.

Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale on Thursday.

Francis Easterday Higginbotham (1869-1945) UT

Francis Easterday Higginbotham, 76, 1337 15^th East, died Wednesday at 3:20 a.m. at his residence of a heart attack.

Mr. Higginbotham was born May 14, 1869, at Ogden, a son of Simon S. and Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham. The early part of his life was spent in Ogden. In 1907 he moved to Salt Lake City to engage in mining interests until 1916, when he returned to Ogden to build and operate the Model laundry. In 1937 he returned to Salt Lake City and opened a wholesale radio business. He was actively engaged in this enterprise until his death.

Mr. Higginbotham is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Dee Higginbotham, Salt Lake City; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy H. Stevenson, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Margaret H. Madsen, Salt Lake City; and two brothers, Thomas C. Higginbotham, Ogden, and Simon S. Higginbotham, Los Angeles.

Mrs. Laura Mary Jacobsen Higginbotham, 69, of 548 Seventeenth, died Wednesday at one forty-five p.m. at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Higginbotham was born Jan. 15, 1879, in Copenhagen, Denmark, a daughter of Peter and Anne Jacobsen. Fifty-two years ago she came to Ogden from Denmark as an L.D.S. convert. She was married to Lester Higginbotham in L.D.S. Salt Lake temple.

She was a member of the Seventh ward and had been active in the Relief society and genealogical work.

Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Elmer Higginbotham, Hollywood, Calif; Carl Higginbotham, Ogden; Mrs. Edna Ward, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Florence Schatz, Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Helen Hilton, Sturgis, Mich.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; also a brother, Hans Jacobsen, Ogden.

Services will be conducted Saturday at two p.m. in the L.D.S. Seventh ward chapel by Bishop Orson T. Foulger. Burial will be in Ogden City cemetery, directed by the mortuary, 533 Twenty-sixth.

Simon Shelby Higginbotham (1867-1948) UT/CA

Simon S. Higginbotham, 80, Little Rock, Calif., founder of the Model laundry, Ogden, died at his home Tuesday, according to word received here. He was a pioneer of Utah.

Mr. Higginbotham was born May 14, 1867, in Ogden, a son of Simon S. and Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham.

On Dec. 2, 1902, he married Ada M. Smith in Ogden. She died in July, 1944.

He founded Model laundry in 1916 and in 1931 moved to California.

Surviving are six sons and daughters: Mrs. William L. Roof, Hollywood; Mrs. Curtice I. Simmons, Ogden; Mrs. Ernest Pugh and Lawrence L. Higginbotham, Los Angeles; S. Louis Higginbotham, Venice, Calif., and William E. Higginbotham, Little Rock, Calif.

Funeral services will be conducted in Los Angeles, and burial will be at Forest Lawn, Glendale.

Elmer Lester Higginbotham (1901-1949) UT/CA

Elmer Lester (Bob) Higginbotham, 48, former Ogden resident, died Saturday in Hollywood, Calif., after a short illness. He left Ogden about 16 years ago for California.

Mr. Higginbotham was born March 31, 1900, in Ogden, a son of Lester J. and Laura Jacobsen Higginbotham. He attended Ogden city schools and a business college.

While in Ogden he was employed by the Model laundry. He was a member of the L.D.S. church and Ogden lodge No. 719, B.P.O. Elks.

In Hollywood he was employed by the Sparklets Water Co.

Survivors include his widow, the former Gladys Eastman of Ogden; a son, Dale, both of Hollywood; and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Edna Ward, Seattle, Wash.; Carl Higginbotham, Ogden; Mrs. Florence Schatz, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Helen Hilton, Sturgess, Mich.

Services will be conducted Friday at three p.m. at the mortuary, Twenty-fourth at Adams, Ogden. Burial will be in Ogden City cemetery.

Isabelle Robson Heginbotham (1870-1951) UT

Mrs. Belle Robson Heginbotham, 82, 118 O St., for many years an active women’s club and community leader in Salt Lake City, died Friday at 2 p.m., at Allentown, Pa., where she had been visiting since last December with a daughter, Mrs. D. N. Nowers.

Mrs. Heginbotham had been ill for a month.

She had served as president of the Ladies Literary club, Reviewers club and chapter D, P.E.O. sisterhood. For 24 years she was a member of the board of directors of Sarah Daft home for the aged, serving as chairman of the house committee.

Mrs. Heginbotham was born in Aspatria, Cumberland county, England, and came to the United States at the age of 17 with her parents, Andrew and Margaret Blackburn Robson. The family lived at Scribner, Neb., and was there that she met Frank Heginbotham, to whom she was married in Salt Lake City June 10, 1896. They celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary in 1946. Mr. Heginbotham died Oct. 3, 1950.

Mrs. Heginbotham was affiliated with the First Congregational church.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Earl R. Heginbotham, Los Angeles; J. Howard Heginbotham, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Nowers (Persa), Allentown, and Mrs. J. Harold (Ruth) Sturgeon, Los Angeles; five grandsons, two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Mumberson, Orchard, Neb., and Mrs. Albert Ross, Wayne, Neb., and a brother, James W. Robson, Sioux City, Ia.

Thomas Carnahan Higginbotham (1885-1951) UT

Thomas C. Higginbotham, 65, of 1521 Kiesel, one of the founders and a longtime employee of Ogden Model laundry, died yesterday at four-ten p.m. in a local hospital after a long illness. Mr. Higginbotham was born April 16, 1885, In Ogden, a son of Simon S. and Margaretta Easterday Higginbotham. He was educated in Ogden city schools and resided his entire life here. On Aug. 11, 1910, he married Florence Elizabeth Fowler in Brigham City. He was a member of the L. D. S. Tenth ward. In 1916 he and other members of the Higginbotham family cooperated in the opening of the Model laundry. Since then he had been actively engaged in work for that company. Surviving are his widow, one son, Jack T. Higginbotham. Salt Lake City; one daughter, Mrs. Charles A. (Hazel) Russell, Ogden, and three grandsons. Services will be conducted Thursday at three p.m. at the mortuary, 3408 Washington, Bishop's Counselor Cleon A. Irish of the L. D. S. Tenth ward officiating. Cecil Vernon Higginbotham (1923-1951) MN/UT

Salt Lake City-A 28-year-old laborer was apparently buried alive last night in a newly filled subdivision ditch.

The body of Vern Higginbotham was recovered three hours later after a fellow workman discovered that he was missing.

Police said that Higginbotham, a native of Bemidji, Minn., was apparently trapped when a bulldozer scooped dirt into the 12-foot deep ditch. There were no witnesses.

He is believed to have a wife, Emily, and four children in Bemidji.

Salt Lake City-Miss Katherine Louise Higginbotham, 78, of Arcadia, Calif., formerly of Ogden, died yesterday in Salt Lake City.

Miss Higginbotham was born Aug. 30, 1880, in Ogden, a daughter of Samuel H. and Mary Elizabeth Shupe Higginbotham.

While in Ogden, she had taught school and also served as Weber County recorder. She had been a teacher at the McCune School of Music in Salt Lake City. She had been active in the LDS East Pasadena Ward Relief Society, had been clerk in the LDS Hollywood Stake and assistant recorder in the Idaho Falls Temple. She served a mission to Mexico from 1921 to 1922.

Surviving are a brother, Orland Higginbotham, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and a sister, Mrs. A. S. (May) Hawkes, Arcadia.

The body will be brought to Ogden. Funeral services will be announced by Lindquist and Sons Mortuary.

Higginbotham-Funeral services for Miss Katherine Louise Higginbotham of Arcadia, Calif., former Ogden resident, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Lindquist and Sons Colonial Funeral Chapel with Elder Raymond Hawkes of Sugar City, Idaho, officiating. Ucon, Idaho-Funeral services were held in Ucon for Orland Higginbotham, 72, who died Oct. 6.

Mr. Higginbotham was born June 10, 1890, in Ogden, and moved to Farnum, Idaho, in 1906. He later lived in Rigby, Idaho, and came to Ucon 15 years ago.

He was married to Jean Orr in 1909. She died in 1922. On June 9, 1924, he was married to Grace Johnson in Ogden. She died in 1956.

He was a member of the LDS Church.

Mrs. Higginbotham was born Jan. 30, 1899, in Ogden, a daughter of Roger and Minnie Shields.

She was a member of the Baptist Church, Ladies of the Elks and Classmates Club.

On April 22, 1922, she was married to J. Leslie Higginbotham in Ogden.

Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Thomas E. (Joanne) Slater, Ogden, and three grandchildren.

Mr. Higgenbotham was born April 11, 1897, in Ogden, a son of Joseph S. and Elvera Ohlson Higgenbotham.

He was married to Edythe Shields on April 22, 1923, in Ogden. She died May 21, 1962.

He retired as a laundryman for Model Laundry after 45 years.

He was a member of the BPO Elks 719, Veterans of World War I of USA and the LDS Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Thomas E. (Joanne) Slater, Ogden; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. George (June) Oxnam, Ogden, and Mrs. Floyd (Beverly) Layton, Bellevue, Wash.

Mrs. Oxnam was born June 14, 1900, in Ogden, a daughter of Joseph S. and Elvera Ohlson Higginbotham.

On Feb. 19, 1921, she was married to George C. Oxnam. Mr. Oxnam died March 5, 1968.

She was a member of the 44^th LDS Ward.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Floyd (Beverly) Layton, Bellevue, Wash.

Salt Lake City-Mrs. Margaret Dee Higginbotham, of 2045 Walker Lane, former Ogden resident, died Wednesday at her home of causes incident to age. She was 92.

Mrs. Higginbotham was born July 9, 1880, in Ogden, a daughter of Thomas Duncombe and Annie Taylor Dee.

On Jan. 1, 1906, she was married to Francis Easterday Higginbotham in Ogden. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mr. Higginbotham died Oct. 10, 1945.

She was an active member of the LDS Church and had served as president of the YWMIA in the Ogden 5^th Ward.

Frances Marion Higginbotham Hawkes (1884-1973) UT/ID

Francis Hawkes Dies at Age 88
Orem, Utah-A Former Farnum area resident, Francis Marion Higginbotham Hawkes, 88, died suddenly Tuesday in a hospital in Orem, Utah.
Mrs. Hawkes, who came to the area in 1906, was the first teacher in the Farnum Rock Building. She married Acil Smart Hawkes in the Salt Lake City, Utah, temple on Nov. 24, 1909, and they pioneered in dry farming in Farnum until his retirement in 1947.
At that time they moved to Arcadia, Calif., until her husband's death in 1963.
Mrs. Hawkes was born Feb. 14, 1884, in Ogden, Utah to Samuel Hensley Higginbotham and Mary Elizabeth Shupe. She was the 10th of 12 children.
She spent her childhood in Ogden where she attended school and was a graduate of Weber Academy with a teacher's certificate. She then taught school for two years in Unitah in north Ogden.
Mrs. Hawkes was active in the LDS Church as a member of the Tabernacle Choir, serving as primary president, relief society president, primary chorister and Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Paul (Peggy) Forster of Springville, Utah, and one son, Raymond H. Hawkes of Sugar City. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hawkes was preceded in death be her husband, three children and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Marysville LDS Ward in Ashton. Friends may call at the relief society room before the services. Interment will be in the Pineview Cemetery in Ashton.

Seattle, Wash.-Carl Higginbotham, 71, former Ogden resident, died here Thursday.

He was born Sept. 22, 1904 in Ogden, a son of Lester and Laura Jacobson Higginbotham.

He lived in Ogden until moving to Hollywood, Calif., about 20 years ago.

He was employed in Ogden by the Model Laundry. In California, he was employed as an aerospace Technician for the North American Aviation Co., until retiring two years ago.

Survivors include three sisters, Edna Ward of Seattle; Mrs. Robert (Florence) Schatz of Modesto, Calif.; and Helen Hilton of Sturgis, Mich.

William Andrews Higginbotham (1912-1994) UT

Toquerville, Utah-William A. (Bill) Higginbotham, age 81, passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 1994 at his home in Toquerville after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 1, 1912 in Salt Lake City to Francis David and Geneva A. Marsh Higginbotham.

Mr. Higginbotham’s early life was spent in Salt Lake where he graduated from LDS High School. He served a two year LDS mission in Samoa and because of ill health completed his labors in the California Mission. He attended the University of Utah and graduated from BYU. He married his eternal sweetheart, Frances W. Salzner Aug. 8, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 56 years.

Mr. Higginbotham taught school in Granite, Weber and Intermountain Indian School in Utah. He continued his teaching career in Southern Calif. At Santa Paula High, Ventura School and Camarillo State Hospital. He resided in Salt Lake City, Brigham City, Utah; Santa Paula and Camarillo in California before moving to St. George in 1977 and has resided in Toquerville since 1987. His main interest, after his wife and family, was wood carving and was known professionally as “Whittlin’ Bill.” He authored four “How To” books on wood carving with distribution in the United States, England and Canada. He enjoyed demonstrating and exhibiting his caricatures at many schools and art shows. The Festival of the American West in Logan, Utah was a favorite time. He was featured in many newspapers and magazine articles. As an active member of the LDS Church, he taught in all organizations and always willing to give of his time and talents. Spare time was spent giving loving care to his garden and small fruit orchard in Toquerville.

Surviving family members include his wife, Frances of Toquerville; sons, Dr. Keith F. (Wendy) of Vienna, Va.; Grant S. of Visalia, Calif., and Mrs. Alan (Linda) Scholes of LaVerkin, Utah; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Frances Webb Salzner Higginbotham (1914-2000) UT

St. George-Frances Webb Salzner Higginbotham, 85, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, in Toquerville, Utah, after a short bout with cancer. She was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Laura Isabel Webb and Francis Salzner. She married William Andrews Higginbotham on Aug. 18, 1937, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Frances was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She lived with her father and mother in Basel, Switzerland, from 1931 through 1935 during the time he3r father was mission president of the Swiss-German mission. She served as ward Relief Society president, Primary teacher, pianist, visiting teacher, extraction worker for German records, and in the St. George Temple for many years.

Frances was a member of the last class to attend LDS High School in Salt Lake City, and she attended the University of Utah. She enjoyed sewing for herself, her children and her grandchildren, reading, gardening and assisting her husband in writing wood carving books. After marriage, Frances resided in Utah, New York, Arizona, Western Samoa and California. She and her husband retired to St. George and Toquerville.

Frances is survived by her children: Keith (Wendy) Higginbotham of Vienna, Va., and Linda (Alan) Scholes of LaVerkin; sister, Helen Dean of Salt Lake City; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; and a son, Grant.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Toquerville LDS Chapel, 70 N. Toquerville Blvd. Family and friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 at the Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 N. Main, and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. prior to services at the Toquerville LDS Chapel. Interment will be in the LaVerkin City Cemetery.

Faye Leona Sisam Higginbotham, age 79, died July 23, 2004 in Salt Lake City after a long illness.
Born February 26, 1925 in Midvale, Utah to Amil A. and Elesta M. Robertson Sisam. Married Chester Lee Higginbotham October 28, 1968 in Elko, Nevada. She was a member of the LDS Church and was a brave and courageous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all. We will miss her dearly.

Cassie Amber Higginbotham (1983-2004) UT

WELLINGTON-Cassie Amber Higginbotham, age 21, passed away July 31, 2004 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born May 6, 1983 in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Ray and Annette Winder.

Cassie was above all, a free spirit who loved angels. She would spend every spare minute in the Manti LaSal Mountains, which she dearly loved. More that anything, however, she loved her two little angels Daileny and Tailey. She was a friend to everyone she met and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Cassie is survived by her two daughters, Daileny and Tailey, parents Randy and Annette Winder of Wellington and sisters; Hollie and Dan Peterson, Carrie Higginbotham, Varity and Matt Pettus, Anna and Matt Thomas and Megan and Victor Dunegan, grandmother Stella Reid and many nephews whom she dearly loved.

Funeral services will be held Wed. Aug. 4, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Castle Dale Cemetery.

Icy Virginia Kelly Higginbotham (1922-2005) WV/UT

Virginia Higginbotham passed away July 24, 2005, in St. George, Utah.
She was born to James and Mary Kelly on November 28, 1922 in Harrison County, West Virginia. She married Jesse A. Higginbotham on November 5, 1939 in Charleston, WV. She was reared and educated in Charleston WV. She worked most recently at Defense Depot Ogden until 1974, at which time she retired. She also worked at the Bon Marche. Virginia has been living at Legacy House in St. George, Utah since February 2004. Mom loved to dance. She and Dad belonged to the ELKS, Eagles, and Alta Metra Dance Club. Her favorite dance to show the great grandkids was the jitter bug. They also belonged to the Good Sam Club and Footprinters Assn. Mom loved boating, bowling, and at one time golf.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Lee Hansen and her husband Mark; two grandchildren, Scott Hansen and Curtis (Marie) Hansen; six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jessica, Seth, Coty, Tucker and most recently Kyle. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe Blvd., under the direction of Myers Mortuary in Ogden.

James Younger Higginbotham 1920-2006 We Love You Grandpa James Y. Higginbotham, beloved husband, father, grand father and great-grandfather, proud veteran of World War II, kind and gentle giant passed away on December 10th 2006 of complications following surgery. He is survived by his wife, India Westfall Higginbotham (Wendell, Idaho); children, son James Allen (Kearns), daughter Annette Warburton (Pocatello, Idaho); 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his bride of 50 years, the eternal love of his life, Ora Orgill Higginbotham; and his beloved daughter, Marilyn Garbis. Jim was a loyal and loving father and grandfather, sacrificing to help his family when they needed it. A man of strength and integrity, he was a loyal friend. A soft-spoken and humble man who spoke little, but said much. He will be sorely missed. Elizabeth Violet Squires Higginbotham (1922-2008) UT/TX/KY/OH

Elizabeth (Beth) Higginbotham, 85, beloved wife and mother, grandmother, teacher and community organizer, passed away on Saturday, September 6th, 2008. She was born Elizabeth Violet Squires in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 15th, 1922. After graduating from high school, she enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. She married Robert Higginbotham in 1946. Beth graduated from University of Utah and taught kindergarten. The family then moved to Galveston, Texas where she helped to organize one of the first psychiatric kindergartens in the country. Moving to Louisville, Beth became a community organizer and developed the Head Start initiative as well as other programming for young children in the community. She obtained a graduate degree in Community Development in 1971 and taught classes at Jefferson Community College and IU Southeast. She was an active member and past-president of the U of L Women's Club. She and her husband spent the last few years in Columbus, Ohio to be near their daughter and her family. Beth is survived by her husband Bob, brother Larry, children Sheila and Jeff, their spouses Phil and Elisabeth, and grandchildren Chloe, Kelsey and David. Beth was a dear friend to many and her warmth and caring will live on in those of us who loved her. Services will be held on Sat., November 8th at 2 p.m. at Cave Hill Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the University of Louisville Club.

Ruth Jensen Higginbotham (1915-2010) UT

Ruth Jensen Higginbotham passed away May 7, 2010. She was born May 14, 1915 to James C. Jensen and Sarah Jeppsen Jensen. Her father died May 24, 1915, and Ruth was raised by her mother and her sister, Mabel Forsgren. Ruth graduated from Box Elder High School and then Weber Junior College in 1935. She worked as a legal secretary until she married Jack Higginbotham on April 27, 1940 in Brigham City, Utah. After their marriage Ruth and Jack lived in Denver, Washington, D. C. and Salt Lake City. Ruth was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from childhood to her death. Ruth was always an active person, willing to help and serve others. She volunteered as a hostess at the LDS Church Office Building for 13 years and then for many years as secretary for the Church telephone Help Line answering service of the Social Services Department. She also served in many stake and ward positions as secretary, counselor, and as ward Relief Society president. With Jack, Ruth went on many cruises and tours around the world, and she enjoyed plays and the symphony. She was also an expert seamstress. Ruth is survived by her husband, Jack; two sons and their spouses, Val and Lisa, and David and Gail; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grand-children. All of them loved Ruth, as did those with whom she worked. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Cottonwood First Ward, 6350 South Rodeo Lane. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 23rd from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. Robert David Higginbotham (1921-2010) UT/KY

Dr. Robert David Higginbotham died peacefully June 8, 2010. Predeceased by his wife Elizabeth 2008. Survived by his brother Gene, his children Jeff and Sheila, and their families. Robert was born on March 15th, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David and Bessie Higginbotham. He spent his early years in Salt Lake, hunting and fishing with his brother Gene. He was a graduate from West High. Robert enlisted and served as a Corporal with the 1st Marine Division during World War II. He fought with his division in the Battles of Guadalcanal, Cape of Gloucester, New Britain, and Peleliu. After returning home to Salt Lake City he married Elizabeth Squires, 1946. Robert received a PhD in Bacteriology from the University of Utah and was honored with the prestigious Lederle Award. He accepted a professorship at the University of Texas Medical School - Galveston in 1958, and quickly ascended the academic ranks obtaining Full Professor within five years. Robert and family moved to Kentucky in 1967 where he was a member of the department of Microbiology at the University of Louisville until his retirement in 1990. During his prodigious career he published over 70 scientific papers and book chapters in the areas of immunology, heparin and inflammation. He mentored many students through their doctoral programs. During his retirement, Robert enjoyed life with his wife, friends, and pets. He gardened and spent time with his children and their families who love and miss him. A celebration of his life will be scheduled for a later date.

Jack Thomas Higginbotham (1916 - 2013) UT

Jack Thomas Higginbotham passed away on January 19, 2013 at the age of 96 years. He was born in Ogden, Utah on March 9, 1916 to Thomas Carnahan Higginbotham and Florence Elizabeth Fowler. Jack grew up in Ogden, attending Mount Fort Elementary School, Mount Fort Junior High School, Ogden High School, and graduating from Weber College in 1936. Jack was an excellent student, and with his good grades he received a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago School of Business for his final two years of undergraduate work, graduating in 1938. After graduation, Jack took a job with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Jack married Ruth Lucile Jensen in Brigham City, Utah on April 27, 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. After their marriage they lived in Washington, D. C., Denver, and Salt Lake City, where Jack was appointed as Chief of the Intelligence Division in the Salt Lake City District of the IRS. He served in this capacity until 1971, when he was transferred back to Washington D. C. to head the Programs Branch of the national Intelligence Division. He retired from the IRS in 1972, and moved with Ruth back to Salt Lake City. After his retirement and return to Utah, Jack conducted various investigative assignments for the U.S. Department of Defense, Utah State Legislature, and Utah State Attorney General's office. In 1978, he was appointed to the Governor's Committee on Executive Reorganization for the State of Utah. He also served for several years as an officer of National Federal Executives Association for Utah. Jack was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many capacities during his life, including stake high counselor, stake and ward clerk, and priesthood and auxiliary leader. He had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ, and followed His admonition to love one's neighbors and care for others. For the last 17 years of his life, Jack served as a volunteer patient relations representative at the Cottonwood Hospital, visiting patients on a weekly basis to inquire about their feelings and needs. He was able to visit 40-50 individuals each week, and found great joy in this service. After retirement, Jack and Ruth traveled extensively, taking cruises and tours around the world. Ruth passed away in May 2010. Jack is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Val and Liisa, and David and Gail, nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was loved and respected by all. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 28 at the Little Cottonwood First Ward, 6350 South Rodeo Lane in Murray. A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 27 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Salt Lake City, and at the church on Monday, January 28 from 10:00 am to 10:45 am. Ethel Jean Smith Higginbotham (1924-2014) CO/UT

Richfield, Utah Ethel Jean Smith Higginbotham, age 90, passed away October 21, 2014, in Provo, Utah. She was born March 11, 1924, in Louviers, Colorado to Fred and Ethel Newmarch Smith. She married Ken "Hig" Higginbotham in 1944, while he was serving in the military in Denver. He preceded her in death February 14, 1998. They resided in St. Anthony and Twin Falls, Idaho, as well as Bozeman, Montana, throughout their married life. Jean relocated to Richfield in 2001, after the death of her husband. She was employed by Western Union during her younger years. Jean also worked in the photography industry and completed her working career delivering mail in rural Idaho. Jean joined the LDS Church as a young mother and has faithfully fulfilled many callings throughout her life. She enjoyed visiting friends, family, and being at home. She loved to draw and was an accomplished artist. She loved to paint individual birthday cards for friends, children and grandchildren and displayed her work at an art gallery in Elsinore. Jean is survived by her eight children and has 26 grandchildren and 46 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 27, 2014 at 12:00 Noon in the Richfield 3rd Ward, 985 South 400 West, where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be on Tuesday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. in the Jerome, Idaho Cemetery.

Dorothy Janice Higginbotham-Willcox, 75, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. She was born on August 31, 1943 in Morganton, NC, the daughter of Fred Postell and Annie Parris Higginbotham. She graduated from North Carolina State University.

She married Tilton Willcox in Greenville, NC. Tilton later passed away.

Janice is survived by her step-daughters, Dr. Sara Hudson and Wendy; sister, Doris Rice; niece, Laurie (Vincent) Satovich; nephew, Todd Rice; great-nephew and nieces, Zane, Lindsay, and Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 2374 Grant Ave, Ogden. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.

Billy was born on June 7, 1953 and passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019.

Billy was a resident of Ogden, Utah at the time of passing.

He served in the US Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1992.

A wake will be held next summer with all family and friends welcome.

Michelle Dunn Higginbotham (1953-2021) UT

Richfield, Utah - Michelle Higginbotham (Dunn), 67, died on September 13, 2021, at her home in Richfield, Utah.

Michelle was born October 22, 1953, in Logan, UT to Lila Marie Allred and John William Dunn Jr., both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by two elder sisters, Janice Salter (Farmington, UT) and Jali Eagan (St. George, UT). Michelle grew up in Woods Cross, UT and Layton, UT and then attended Utah State University where she met her future husband of 49 years, Richard (Rick) Fred Higginbotham, son of Kenneth Orr Higginbotham and Ethel Jean Smith (both deceased). On December 11, 1973, Michelle and Rick were sealed to each other in the Logan, UT temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the couple are life-long members of the Church.

Michelle and Rick raised their five children in Kamas, UT, Farmington, MO, and Richfield, UT. While Rick worked for the Forest Service and BLM, Michelle started several small businesses, including seamstress, western wear distributor, air freshener distributor, and circus ringmaster (aka Mother). She was a creative and successful entrepreneur. Michelle was also a gifted writer, talented musician, loyal friend, thoughtful grandmother, perfect mother, and devoted wife. Her warm personality, smiles, clever gifts, sense of humor, and loving attention are already deeply missed. Michelle is survived by Rick (Richfield), her five children: Holden (Nicole), Dylan (Leah), Tanner (Carrie), Hana Benson (Nic), Cabe (Tristan), and 14 grandchildren.

A public memorial service is scheduled for 11 am on Monday, October 4, 2021, at Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, UT (260 North 400 West).

Susanna Leigh Higginbotham Maximoff (1947-2024) UT

On January 31, 1947, Susanna "Susi" Leigh Higginbotham Maximoff graced us with her presence. She was a one of a kind character and a woman of "many hats." She spent time traveling through Europe as a teenager while attending boarding school in Switzerland, where she learned to speak German fluently. Susi was a daddy's girl while growing up and later became an amazing mother to four children. She loved traveling, especially after meeting her husband Nick Maximoff, who took her with him to Federal Highway job sites around the west coast until he retired and moved her back home to Kanab to be near her family and friends. Susi returned to our lord in heaven at age 77 on Saturday, March 9, 2024, where she was greeted by her mother, father, sister and other relatives. Susi is survived and will be missed dearly by her husband of 30 years, Nicolas Boris Maximoff; her four children: David Kyle Ainge, Heidi Marie Ainge, Myron Leonne Ainge and Amy Leigh Bryant; along with 15 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and 25 beautiful hats. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 3:00 PM in the Kanab Kaibab Stake Center. A viewing will be held at the Stake Center from 2:00-3:00 PM. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery. Services were arranged with Mosdell Mortuary.

Doris Elizabeth Higginbotham Rice (1934-2024) NC/UT

August 21, 1934 — October 27, 2024

Doris Elizabeth Higginbotham Rice, 90, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loved ones, on October 27, 2024. Doris was born on August 21, 1934, in Morgantown, North Carolina, to Fred Postell and Annie Parris Higginbotham. Doris graduated from Black Mountain High School, where she showcased her spirited personality as a cheerleader, a member of the B club and the glee club. Her passion for life and the joy she brought to those around her will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. In 1954, she married her beloved husband, Alvin Wade Rice, and they spent 57 wonderful years together, creating a lifetime of memories filled with love and joy. A woman of many talents, Doris loved to help others. She served as a lunch lady and loved all of the children as her own. She drove a school bus for the deaf and blind, dedicating her time to uplift and support those in her community. Doris is survived by her son, Todd; her granddaughter, Morgan; her grandson, Mikael; and her great-grandson, Hendrix. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, and many cats. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Ronda, Louise, and their families for taking such great care of Doris at the end of her earthly journey. Their dedication and compassion provided comfort to her during her final days. They also thank the hospice team, caregivers, friends, and neighbors for their support. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Washington Heights Baptist Church, 1770 East 6200 South, Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
