Nitro Youth Dead In Dive From Lock
Employ Searchlights In Hunt For Body; Companions Not Aware Of Tragedy
Searchers continued their efforts Saturday to recover the body of William Higginbotham, 17 years old, Nitro High School student, who was drowned Friday afternoon when he jumped from the concrete chamber of Lock No. 7 into the river while he was swimming.
Searchlights were rigged up Friday night to assist volunteers seeking the body
The youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Higginbotham and had been promoted to his junior year in high school this week.
Two of his companions, David Ambler and Arnold Owsley, reported that they saw him reappear on the surface after he had gone down the first time, but said they did not know that he was in distress.

Search for Nitro Boy's Body Unrewarded After 36 Hours
New Bathing Suit Proved Shroud for William Higginbotham, Popular High School Student and Athlete
"I hope none of you boys gets married or killed before next year."
Coach Dubois Crickenberger, of Nitro High School, was dismissing his tennis team for the year. It was just his way of saying that he hoped all would be able to report, with racquets ready, next fall.
Coach Crickenberger smiled as he spoke. So, too, did the youthful athletes he addressed. The idea of getting married was amusing. As for getting killed.
A little sad, that parting. But they would see each other frequently during the summer.
The group dispensed and William Higginbotham, 17 years old, walked down the street. The day was warm and there was a bathing suit in a store that he had set his heart upon. The suits were not to go on sale until Saturday, but William was confident of his ability to coax the merchant to sell him one ahead of time.
Youth was served. The suit passed over the counter a day ahead of time. William left his books in the store, saying he would call for them after a dip in the river. It was the work of minutes to round up two or three companions, and the little group set out for Lock No. 7 - their favorite swimming place.
William soon dived from the lock wall. He was followed within a second by one of his friends - so closely, in fact, that the second swimmer touched William under the water.
Tragedy had taken place. One of the tennis team members would not report in the fall.
William drowned in that plunge.
The search for William's body passed the 36-hour mark at midnight. It was believed he had struck a submerged log or rock.
William was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Higginbotham, and was one of the most popular youths in Nitro.

Body Of Boy Found
Poca Men in Boat Discover Nitro School Swimmer
Four miles below the spot where he was drowned last Friday afternoon, the body of William Higginbotham, 17 years old, of Nitro, was taken from the Kanawha River Monday morning.
Floating on the surface, the body was found by Reuben Christy, Homer Fletcher and Tom Eskew, all of Poca, who were rowing in the stream. A reward, offered by the victim's family for the recovery of the body, was divided among the three.
E. E. Higginbotham, Nitro mayor, an uncle of the youth, said an examination revealed an injury on the head, believed to have been received when he dived from the lock wall at Nitro and struck a submerged wall of masonry.
Funeral services for the youth will be held at the Nitro Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J. R. Reynolds and Rev. Urvan Wills will officiate. Burial will be in the I. O. O. F. cemetery, at Poca.

Knocked down and crushed by his own automobile, J. W. Higginbotham of South Charleston, manager of the Charleston Elk’s Club, was killed early yesterday morning at St. Albans.
