Mary Dow Higginbotham, 87, of Charleston, died Jan. 5, 1990, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a Protestant.
Surviving: daughter, Nina Mallett of Red House; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 pm Sunday at Cross Creek Church, Buffalo, with the Rev. Arles Covert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 pm today at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Point Pleasant – William S. "Willie" Higginbotham, 82, of Point Pleasant, died March 29, 1990 in Pleasant Valley Hospital after a short illness.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and an Army veteran.
Surviving: brothers, Arthur and Carroll, both of Robertsburg; one nephew; one niece.
Service will be 2 pm Sunday at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. Burial will be in Kirkland Memorial Gardens, Point Pleasant. Friends may call from 2 to 9 pm today at the funeral home.

Winfield – C. Otis Higginbotham, 82, of Winfield, died Sept. 27, 1990, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.
He was a native of Red House and a 10-year resident of Winfield. He was a retired carpenter and a 38-year member of Carpenters union, a former employee of American Viscose Plant, Nitro, and attended Hometown Church of God Mission.
Surviving: wife, Virgie E. Higginbotham; daughters, Lucille Thornton of Eleanor, Zelda Barnett of Fraziers Bottom; sons, Charles of Nitro, Earl of Hurricane, Ray of St. Albans, Harvey of Parma Heights, Ohio, Denver of Eleanor; sister, Bertie Wolfe of Eleanor; brother, Luther of Red House; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret Price Higginbotham, 68, of 1318 13th St., Nitro, died Oct. 18, 1990 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Charleston. She was a member of Nitro Church of God and Nitro Woman's Club. She was retired vice president of Bank of Nitro with 23 years service.
Surviving: daughter, Joanne Vance of Nitro; son, Larry Allen of Vacaville, Calif.; sisters, Agnes Deahl of Charleston, Lee Ann Ellrich of Juno Isle, Fla.; four grandchildren.

Malcolm M. Higginbotham, 82, of Route 4, Charleston, died Dec. 20, 1990, in VA Medical Center, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was a veteran of World War II and a retired miner.
Surviving: four nieces; four nephews.

Centenarian Succumbs Age of 103
Ida Marie Higginbotham, of 227 ½ North St., New Martinsville, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 1991, in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, at the age of 103.
She was born March 8, 1887, in Dairy, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jacob and Maria Buchmueller Daetwyler.
She was a retired employee of Colin Anderson Center, St. Marys, a Protestant, and a member of the Golden Senior Citizens; the Degree of Honor Lodge No. 35, and V.F.W. Lodge No. 4364 ladies auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles P., in 1953; a son, Robert K., in 1989; three brothers; a sister; a grandson.
Surviving are two sons, William H. of New Martinsville and Charles A. of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a daughter, Alberta J. Jacobus of Rockville, MD.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Wells Funeral Home, New Martinsville, where services were held 2 pm Saturday with the Rev. Randal Gehres officiating. Interment in Clarington Cemetery

Susie Higginbotham, 81, of Big Run, died Wednesday, May 29, 1991 in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. She was a member of Higgins Chapel Church of Christ, Pine Grove.
Surviving are her husband, J. Herbert; a son, Dorn of Reader; a daughter, Jane of Big Run; two brothers, Howard E. Haught of New Martinsville and Woodrow Haught of Grantsville; a sister, Etta Beckley of Paden City; two granddaughters.
Friends were received at Palmer Funeral Home, Pine Grove. Services were held a 1 pm Saturday at Higgins Chapel Church of Christ. Interment in Higginbotham Cemetery, Big Run.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Higginbotham, 49, of 1086 Highland Ave., St. Albans, died June 12, 1991, at her home following a short illness.
She was a rates analyst for Columbia Gas Co. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church, St. Albans, and a lifelong member of St. Albans.
Surviving: sons, James Allison of St. Albans, William Allison, Michael Allison, both of Columbus, Ohio; father, William Lewis of Hurricane; brother, William Lewis Jr. of Hurricane; four grandchildren.

Earley Hansford Higginbotham (1901-1991) WV
Glasgow – Earley Hansford Higginbotham, 89, of Glasgow died Sept 20, 1991, at Memorial Division, CAMC, of a short illness.
He lived most of his life in Kanawha County and was a native of Paradise, Putnam County. He was a former machinist for Thacker Co. and worked for Kanawha Glass Plant of Glasgow and in Dunkirk, N. Y. He was former owner and operator of Higginbotham Barber Shop, Cedar Grove, and a Protestant.
Surviving: daughter, Patricia Ann Higginbotham McCann of Wilmette, Ill.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service will be 10 am Monday at Cooke Funeral Home, Cedar Grove, with the Rev. George Bramble officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park, London. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm today at the funeral home.

Okey Lee Higginbotham, 61, of St. Albans, died Oct. 5, 1991, at Thomas Memorial Hospital of a short illness.
He was a retired coal miner from U.S. Steel and a member of UMW. He was a 24-year resident of St. Albans and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Surviving: wife, Shirley Gross Higginbotham; daughter, Jeanne Unrue of St. Albans; sons, John and Daniel, both of St. Albans, David of Boston; brothers, Charles and Jimmy, both of Charleston; sisters, Phyllis Neff, Deloris Smith and Mary Lou Higginbotham, all of Florida; two grandchildren.

LEAGUE CITY, Texas—James Wesley Higginbotham Jr., 73, of League City, formerly of South Charleston, W. Va., died May 15, 1992, at Humana Hospital, Webster, after a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., Texas City, and a former employee of Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston. He was retired from Champion International Paper, Sheldon. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 159, Scottish Rite, AF&AM, Beni-Kedem Shrine, UCT and Knights of Pythias. He was a former elder of First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston.
Surviving: son, James W. III of League City; daughter, Vicki Marie Hardin of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepsister, Thelma Hunt of Charleston, W. Va.; two grandchildren.

Effie Higginbotham, 80, of Piney View, died Friday, May 29, in a Beckley hospital.
Born April 12, 1912 at Red Spring, she was the daughter of the late David C. and Stella Ward Fox.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse “Pete” Martin.
Survivors include her husband, Clark Higginbotham Sr.; two sons, John “Bill” Martin and Clark Higginbotham Jr., both of Piney View; a brother, Alpha Fox of Meadow Bridge; three sisters, Macie Adkins and Elva Ervin, both of Piney View; and Cenor Quinn of Stanaford; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private service s will be held Monday with the Rev. Carlos Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Mrs. Goldie Higginbotham Smith, age 73, of White Sulphur Springs died Sunday, June 7, 1992 in Humana Hospital Greenbrier Valley, Fairlea, following an extended illness.
She was born August 8, 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, a daughter of the late Roy and Maggie Gill Higginbotham.
She attended the White Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, Willow Street, White Sulphur Springs, was a member of the W.I.B.C. Bowling Association, the Perrine Moose Lodge 380, chapter 1610.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Smith in 1977.
She is survived by one son, Ira Corbert, White Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Hanshew, White Sulphur Springs and Maggie McDowell, Miami, Florida; one stepson, Dale Smith of Phillipi; two stepdaughters, Donna Smith and Mrs. Marie Brooks, both of White Sulphur Springs; four grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren, and twelve great-step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with Rev. Delbert Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg.
The family will receive their friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ivan Harrison Higginbotham, 99, of 6014 Shasta Drive, died June 27, 1992, at the home of his daughter, Eloise Harrison of Charleston, after a long illness.
He was a member of Allens Fork Community Church, Sissonville, American Legion Post 20 and was an Army veteran of World War I. He was a retired merchant and farmer.
Also surviving: sons, Golden and Oscar, both of Sissonville; stepson, G. T. "Thad" Boggess of Sissonville; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren.

Billie Warren Higginbotham, 72, of Oak Hill, died of natural causes Saturday, Sept. 19, at a Beckley hospital.
Born on Jan. 11, 1920, at Elverton, he was the son of the late Newton Warren and Rosa Hinkle Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham was a retired employee of the Cedar Coal Company at Chelyan, with 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Berry Higginbotham, on June 13, 1984, and two brothers, Arnett and Herbert Higginbotham.
Survivors include three daughters, Rose Marie Fleshman Godbey of Fayetteville, N. C., Margaret Ann and Sharon Jean Higginbotham, both of Oak Hill; a son, Billie Wayne Higginbotham of Oak Hill; four sisters, Margie Richmond of Charleston, Vermont Neff of Danese, Hilma and Shirley Nolan, both of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, Jackie Keith Higginbotham of Rock Hill, S. C.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Revs. David White and Mack Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in the High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

PINE GROVE—Lillie G. Fluharty, 95, died Monday, April 12, at her home.
She was born Jan. 26, 1898, in Rock Camp, a daughter of the late Francis L. and Mary D. Morris Higginbotham.
Her husband, Walter Fluharty, preceded her in death, March 13, 1959.
Surviving are one son, Charles Fluharty, Point Pleasant; one daughter, Mary Potts, Pine Grove, and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Potts and several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Fluharty was a member of the Jacksonburg Church of Christ.

Surviving are a son, Charles of Point Pleasant; a daughter, Mary Potts of Pine Grove; three grandchildren, James Potts of Pine Grove, Walter Fluharty of Akron, Ohio, and Charlene Westwood of Birmingham, England; five great-grandchildren.

Born at Lynchburg, he was a son of the late James Leslie and Ada Virginia Wright
Higginbotham.
He was educated in the public schools system of Lynchburg. In 1927, he moved to
Bluefield and affiliated with and soon became a member of Scott Street Baptist
Church. He was a member of the Helping Hand Circle, a member of the Trustee
Board and served on various committees and in 1990 he was honored for his
50-plus years of membership and service. He was a retired Captain, Medical
Corps, U. S. Army. He began part time serving Beckley Appalachian Regional
Hospital in 1956 and Bluefield State College as a physician and examiner for the
Selective Service Local Board No. 2 of Mercer County. He also held medical
privileges at St. Luke’s Hospital and Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
He has been honored and recognized by many local organizations and his church.
In 1988, he was named Bluefield’s Citizen of the Year and also was awarded an
honorary L.L.B. from Bluefield State College.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mariam Gwendolyn Hughes and one sister.
Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Donald (Lynn H.) Miller of Bluefield, VA; foster son,
David L. Banks of Lynchburg; granddaughter, Rhoda M. Williams; and two
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted today at 1 p.m. at the Scott Street Baptist Church
of Bluefield, WV, with the Rev. Garry Moore Sr. officiating.
Burial will follow at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery on the Old
Bluefield-Princeton Road.

Prominent Doctor Dies
BLUEFIELD—Dr. Peyton Randolph Higginbotham, a prominent Bluefield physician and
long time School Physician at Bluefield State College died in his home Friday.
He was 90.
Born in Lynchburg in 1902, he was educated at Howard University in Washington,
D.C. where he received his BS degree in 1923, and his M.D. in 1926. After
completing his residency and internship at Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, he
came to Bluefield in 1928 and joined the medical staff of the Providence
Hospital, a Negro hospital located on Scott Street in the city. There, he joined
in the private practice of medicine with Dr. C.A. Rogers and began his medical
affiliation with Bluefield State.
Dr. Higginbotham served his community with distinction. During the segregation
era, he was instrumental in establishing a “Well Baby Clinic” through the
Carolina Community Home (now Bluefield Community Center) to help African
American women with pre and pos-natal care.
In later years, he was appointed to the West Virginia State Health Department
Board, where he eventually earned the office of president. He was also a past
Chairman of the Board of the OH-9 Health Association.
Along with practicing medicine, he and his associates brought culture to the
coal fields. After gaining a taste for jazz and big band music while in college,
and becoming a close friend of Duke Ellington, Dr. Higginbotham brought most of
the top jazz performers of the 1940’s and 50’s to Bluefield for performances. He
and his associates subsidized the visits, then provided accommodations for the
performers.
He was active in local, county and state medical associations and held
membership in the National Medical Association and the American Medical
Association. In 1988, he was named Bluefield’s Citizen of the Year, and he was
also awarded an honorary L.L.B. from Bluefield State College. He was a member of
Scott Street Baptist Church, and had held medical privileges at St. Luke’s
Hospital, and Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gwynne, and is survived by a daughter, Lynn
Berlaine Miller of Bluefield and David L. Banks of Lynchburg. Richardson Funeral

Peyton Randolph Higginbotham
BLUEFIELD—Peyton Randolph Higginbotham, 90, of Bluefield, died Friday at his
home.

Higginbotham, 82, of Sand Ridge died Dec. 13, 1994, at Roane General Hospital,
Spencer, after a long illness.
He was born in Putnam
County, was a member of Albert’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge,
where he served as adult class leader and Sunday school superintendent. He owned
and operated a trucking company in Sand Ridge.
Surviving: sons, Paul D.
of Newton, H. Burl of Terre Haute, Ind., Richard M. of Doylestown, Ohio;
daughter, Irene H. Bradshaw of Nesconset, N.Y.; brother, Frank of Belle; sister,

Titusville, Fla. – Albert C. Higginbotham, 78, of Titusville, formerly of Ward and Hughston, WV died Dec. 22, 1994 in Titusville after a long illness.
He was a retired coal miner from Valley Camp Coal Co. with 20 years service and a former employee of Conrail. He was a member of UMWA and the Transportation Workers union.
Surviving: sisters, Nora Higginbotham of McConnelsville, Ohio, Dora Whitley of Cedar Grove, WV, Lucille Truman of Gauley Bridge, WV, Helen Groah of Mims; brothers, Robert of Rand, WV, Orville H. "Bill" of McConnellsville; seven grandchildren.

following a long illness.
Born Oct. 11, 1909, in
Hinton, she was the daughter of the late John D. and Linda Sears.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a
housewife and a member of the Redstar Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Johnnie Higginbotham; a son, James D. Higginbotham; six brothers
and a sister.
Survivors include a son,
Gerald Higginbotham of Redstar; four daughters, Ruby Kessinger of Oak Hill,
Myralee Jones of Richmond, Va., Nilah Clemins of Oak Hill and Virginia Helton of
Bradley; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m.

PRINCETON—Grady Higginbotham, 90, of Route 9, box 65, Pisgah
Road, Princeton, died Tuesday, May 28, 1996, in a Princeton hospital.
Born in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Andy and Dosha Hazelwood
Higginbotham. He was a retired car inspector for the Virginian Railroad and the
Norfolk and Western Railroad in Elmore, W.Va. He was a member of the Brotherhood
of Railroad Carmen. He also was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church
in Princeton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Wanda Clark
Higginbotham; one son, David Clark Higginbotham; two brothers, Earl Higginbotham
and Dewey Higginbotham, and four sisters, Media Duncan, Murrell Duncan, Leora
Higginbotham, and Iva Mae Higginbotham.
Surviving: two sons, Kenneth G. Higginbotham and Robert G. “Bobby” Higginbotham,
both of Princeton; one daughter, Shelia D. Hearn of Princeton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the George W. Seaver
Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. Blair Wallace and Mark Deeter

Charles Albert Jacob Higginbotham (1917-1998) WV/CA
On September 9, 1998 in Santa Rosa, CA. Charles A. Higginbotham, born in New Martinsville, WV on January 11, 1917, he was the dearly beloved husband of 54 years to Dolores; beloved father of Pamela Baglian and the late Robert Higginbotham; adored grandfather of Kimberly and Bradley Baglian. He is also lovingly survived by numerous nieces and nephews. An electronics engineer, Mr. Higginbotham was a member of the Radio Club of America, the Oakmont Golf Club, S.I.R.S., Star of the Valley Catholic Church and was a Ham Radio operator. He spent 30 years with the Federal Communications Commission. Before coming to the FCC, he worked with United Airlines in San Francisco, CA. He served his country in the US Navy, and retired form the Naval Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant. After retiring, he moved from Maryland to Sarasota, FL. There, he established Higginbotham and Associates Consulting Engineers to specialize in all aspects of telecommunications. He moved to Oakmont in Santa Rosa, CA in 1988. Adams, 30 of Smithfield, W. Va., died Sunday Nov. 22, 1998 at Ruby Memorial
Hospital, Morgantown, W. Va.
She was born 8 Jan 1968 in East Liverpool, Ohio, the daughter of
the late Bennie Higginbotham and Linda Quinn Higginbotham Adams.
She was preceded in death by her material grandfather, William
Quinn.
Surviving are her husband, Robert B. "Bob" Adams; one daughter,
Lindsay Taylor Adams at home; her mother and stepfather, Mick and Linda Adams;
one brother, Bennie Higginbotham of Smithfield; two sisters, Christy
Higginbotham of Smithfield and Cherie Morgan of Salem, W. Va; her maternal
grandmother, Charity Quinn of Pine Grove.
Services were held on Nov 25, 1998 at the Light House Church in Smithfield. Interment was at the Young Cemetery in Folsom.

Hattie O. Boland, 102, of Shady Spring, died at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.
17, 1999, in a Raleigh County care center following a long illness.
Born Feb. 28, 1897, in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late Charles
O. and Sarah Elizabeth Cornell Higginbotham, and lived most of her life in
Summers County.
Mrs. Boland attended the Jumping Branch Gospel Tabernacle and worked as a cook
at the Summers County Jail under Sheriff Earl Hellems.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Lipscomb; her second
husband, Harold Boland; a son, Eugene “Shady” Lipscomb; and a stepson, Paul
Leonard Boland.
Survivors include two sons, Merrell Boland and his wife, Shirley, of Nimitz and
Joe Boland and his wife, Margaret, of Jumping Branch; a daughter, Joyce Hicks
and her husband, Guy of Shady Spring; a stepdaughter, Mildred Ulrich of Des
Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel,
Hinton, with Pastor Elmo Alderman officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood
Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

SCARBRO - Henry W. Higginbotham, 61, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at his home following a short illness.
Born May 6, 1938, in Fire Creek, he was the son of the late Loren Higginbotham and Ruth Aurentz Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham was a disabled coal miner, formerly employed with Consolidation Coal, Roland Mine, as an electrician and a member of the UMWA and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Higginbotham.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bondzo Higginbotham; four daughters, Annette Fedukovich of Oxford, Fla., and Lisa Linkous, Michelle Higginbotham and Stephanie Higginbotham, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Jerry Higginbotham of Scarbro; grandchildren, Adam and Briana Linkous of Virginia Beach and Aaron and Hannah Fedukovich of Oxford, Fla.; and two brothers, the Rev. Lloyd Higginbotham of Bradley and Lawrence Higginbotham of Oak Hill.

two brothers, Buster Higginbotham, New Martinsville, and Bill Higginbotham,
Smithfield; one sister, Pauline Arnolds, Jacksonburg; and 13 grandchildren.
Mrs. Cross was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, New Martinsville.
She was a former aide for Home Health Care, a former social worker for the
Department of Human Services of New Martinsville, and a former nurses aide at
Sistersville Nursing Home.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday
in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery.

HENDERSON -- Carol W. Higginbotham, 82, of Henderson, Mason County, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a farmer and a member of First Nazarene Church of Gallipolis, Ohio.
Surviving: wife, Ruth Higginbotham; son, Carol E. of Letart; daughter, Shirley V. Higginbotham; brothers, Charles and Ray of Southside; sisters, Lora Rawson of Middleport, Ohio, Linda Dunn of Pomeroy, Ohio, Maggie Sheppard of Point Pleasant; five grandchildren one great-grandchild.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Deal Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, with the Rev. Emmett Rawson and the Rev. Handley Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Henderson, with military rites.
Friends may all from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
