Alma Kathryn Buck Higginbotham (1921-2001) WV

Alma K. Buck Higginbotham, 79, of Buffalo died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at home following a long illness.

She was a homemaker, attended the Buffalo Church of the Nazarene, and Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra Higginbotham; son, Charles Ezra Higginbotham; brothers, Millard “Dallas” Buck, James Buck; and sister, Leoda “Ruth” Null.

Survivors include: daughter, Anna “Cricket” Higginbotham Workman of Grimms Landing; son, Gary L. Higginbotham Buffalo; sisters, Louise McCoy of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Estill Dencil Higginbotham (1920-2001) WV

BUFFALO - Dencil Higginbotham, 80, of Buffalo, formerly of Point Pleasant, died July 29, 2001, in CAMC General Hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Abraham and Sophie Higginbotham. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Higginbotham; one daughter and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired riverboat engineer for the O.F. Shearer & Sons Co. with 25 years of service and was a Christian.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Linda L. and Larry J. Tolley of Buffalo; grandson, Jeffrey L. Tolley of Buffalo; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Lisa L. and John F. Booth of Buffalo; great-grandsons, Tyler, Justin and Stephen Booth of Buffalo; brother, Lawrence Higginbotham of Alvada, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Tim Day, Pastor Arles Covert and Pastor Mac Minton officiating. Burial will be in Kirkland Memorial Gardens, Point Pleasant.

Helen Elizabeth Moore Higginbotham (1921-2001) WV

NEW CUMBERALND – Helen Elizabeth Higginbotham, 79, of R. D. 3, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Ohio Valley Hospital in Wheeling following a sudden illness.
She was born in Mannington, W.Va., Dec. 19, 1921, a daughter of the late James F. and Blanche M. Hayes Moore.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clem Higginbotham.
She is survived by four daughters, Linda Hoffman of Morgantown, Mrs. Terry (Anna) Raines and Mrs. Jack (Rhonda) Sandy of New Cumberland and Kathleen Brackett of Chariton, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Lester (June) Higginbotham of Mannington, W.Va., Mrs. Ray (Betty) Ammons of Weston, W. Va., and Mrs. Ray (Rosedell) Hayes, of Massillon; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
The Revs. Billy Ray Carpenter and Charles E. Andrews will conduct services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery.

James Franklin Higinbotham (1933-2001) WV/IL/IN/AL

James F. Higinbotham, 67, formerly of Fairmont, died at a Pensacola, Fla. hospital following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Fairmont, a son of the late Samuel and Minnie Bartholow Higinbotham.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and was employed by Republic Steel Company in Warren, Ohio for a number of years.
He lived in Illinois, Indiana, and Brewton, Ala., where he resided for the past seven years.
He was employed by the Brewton Iron Works and the Delta Bay Security Company while living in Alabama.
His greatest pleasure was playing his guitar and singing for family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Satterfield Higinbotham; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and Mike Hammond, and Kimberly Vernon, and a son, Dan Vernon, all of Warren, Ohio; three grandchildren; a sister, Wanda L. Sapp of Fairmont; and two dear friends, Vicklyn Wright and her brother, Todd Boutwell of East Brewton, Ala.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beverly Leah; five brothers, Edward, Eugene, Joseph, Robert, and Donald Higinbotham; and three sisters, Rose Mary Higinbotham, Viola Dunn, and H. Frances Shores.
A private memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Warren, Ohio.

Charles William Higginbotham (1906-2001) WV

Charles W. Higginbotham, 94, of Dunbar, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was a heavy equipment mechanic for Walker Machinery Co., and was formerly employed by West Virginia Tractor Co., and Glenbrook Coal Co., where he was voted a No. 1 mechanic.

He had been a Dunbar resident for 60 years and enjoyed his vegetable farm on Pleasant Ridge, Putnam County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, after 58 years of marriage.

Surviving are his son, Charles E. Higginbotham of Gaithersburg, Md., daughter, Viola “Vi” Nichols of Nitro; brother, Harold Higginbotham of Dunbar; sisters, Clara Reedy of Albany, Ohio, Mildred Jeffers of Dexter, Ohio, and Naomi Glassburn of Bidwell, Ohio; grandchildren, Marnie Higginbotham of York, Pa., and Terri Lindstrom of Austin, Texas.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor John A. Mason officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Rev. Lloyd Wayne Higginbotham (1942-2001) WV

Rev. Lloyd Wayne Higginbotham, 59, of Bradley, W.Va. went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at C.A.M.C. Memorial Hospital.

He was born January, 9, 1942 in Layland, W.Va. to the late Rev. Loran and Ruth Lenore Aurentz Higginbotham.

He was the minister of Page Baptist Church and was manager of Sun Propane in Lewisburg, W.Va. Rev. Higginbotham was a member of the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Henry, and Lawrence Higginbotham.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Vass Higginbotham; daughters, Lisa Renee Green and her husband, Robert of MacArthur, W.Va., Cynthia Beth Massey and her husband, Jimmy of Wendell, N.C.; grandchildren, Natalie Worley, Kayla Massey, and Cynthia A. Massey.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Page Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Lutz and Rev. Delmas Wolfe. Entombment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, W.Va. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Harold Robert Higginbotham, 90, of Dunbar, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a retired foreman with Union Carbide and was a World War II Navy Veteran. Mr. Higginbotham was a member of the Dunbar Masonic Lodge No. 159 and the Beni Kedem Shrine. He had been a 60-year resident of Dunbar.

Elmer Sheridan Higginbotham (1918-2001) WV

Mr. Elmer S. Higginbotham, 83, of Nitro died Dec. 25, 2001 in Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

Mr. Higginbotham was a 56 year resident of Nitro; he retired from Avtex Fibers in Nitro with 38 years of service. He was a member of the American Textile Workers of America, AFL-CIO, one of the founders and builders of Lett Creek Community Church.

He is survived by his children, William E. Higginbotham of Nitro, Toby McCallister of Bancroft and Mary Tillis of Bancroft; brothers, Robert Higginbotham of Black Betsy and Kermit Higginbotham of Ohio; sister, Juanita Cobb of Liberty; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Ruby Sarah Higginbotham, 85, of Mannington (Logansport community), died Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born Aug. 16, 1916 at Seven Pines, Mannington, a daughter of the late David H. and Clara Campbell Yost. She was a homemaker. She attended the Logansport United Methodist Church and the Joe’s Run Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Harold Higginbotham; one son, Calvin Henry "Bud" Yost of Mannington and a resident of St. Barbara’s Nursing Home in Monongah.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Yost and Thomas Woodrow Yost.

Friends may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the Masters Funeral Home in Mannington. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Evangelist Ron Allen officiating. Burial will follow at the Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

RED STAR - Shirley T. Higginbotham, 62, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born April 8, 1939, at Claremont, she was the daughter of the late Ote Gardner and Fitsque Adkins Gardner.

Mrs. Higginbotham was a member of the Summerlee Freewill Baptist Church, and she was a housewife.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Gardner and Bobby Gardner.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, the Rev. Gerald L. Higginbotham, 68, of Hurricane died Feb. 12, 2002, at home, after a short illness.
He was a 33 year resident of Hurricane and a former resident of Dunbar and St. Albans.
He was a former truck driver for Continental Can Corporation/ Sonoco Fibre Drum, Culloden, retiring after 30 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Teays Valley. He was a retired member of United Steelworkers of America, Local 6888 and he served in the United States Army and Marines.
Mr. Higginbotham was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Lynn Higginbotham and his parents, Basil and Delma Higginbotham. He is survived by his wife, Jean Crago Higginbotham; daughter and
son-in-law, Lisa and Ralph Langley of Hurricane, son and daughter-in-law, David and Leslie Higginbotham of Hurricane; three sisters, Jacqueline Craigo of Dunbar, Janet Wilson of Oak Island, N.C., Betty Bradley of

PAGE - William W. "Bill" Higginbotham, 83, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in a Montgomery hospital following a long illness.
Born Dec. 5, 1918, at Hizer Creek, he was the son of the late Noah Wilson and Myrtia Mae Gullion Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham was a retired coal miner and of the Protestant faith.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Higginbotham.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Iris Davis Higginbotham; his daughter, Ruby Withrow of Kimberly; a sister, Bertha Cobb of Kincaid; two grandchildren, Gary Higginbotham of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Carla Harkless of Gauley Bridge; and three great-grandchildren.

Ruby E. Higginbotham, 88, of Nitro, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a retired cook from Nitro Moose Lodge No. 565 with 25 years of service and Nitro High School with 20 years of service. She was a native of Putnam County and a lifelong resident of Nitro and attended Rock Branch Independent Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, George P. Higginbotham Sr.; sons, George Jr., Eugene, and Bobbie Lee Higginbotham.
She is survived by: a granddaughter, Reba and her husband, Michael Parsons and their children, Chelsea and Alex of Nitro; granddaughters, Pam Higginbotham of San Diego, Calif., and Barbara Witt of Hometown; grandsons, Randy Higginbotham of Cross Lanes, Steve Higginbotham of St. Albans and Bobby Higginbotham of Nitro. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

TEMPLE, Texas - Leola Gertrude Higginbotham, 84, of Temple, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 in a Temple hospital.
Leola Higginbotham was born July 12, 1918, in Princeton. She was the daughter of the late John Dobbins and Eva Gaye Clark Dobbins.
She married Earl Higginbotham Sr., who preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1972.
She attended school in Athens. Mrs. Higginbotham was a resident of West Virginia most of her life. She has been a resident of Temple the past four years. She enjoyed crocheting and collecting thimbles. Leola was a member of the United Methodist Women's Association in Athens.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, and six brothers.
She is survived by her son, Earl Higginbotham Jr. and wife, Anong of Temple; one sister, Ozella of Ohio; two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Duke of Temple and Patricia M. Higginbotham of Linwood, N.C.
A service will be held 11 a.m. today at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple.

KENNA - Lola L. Fields, 96, of Kenna departed this life Nov. 23, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Earnestine Harrison of Liberty, following a long illness.

She was born May 22, 1906, at Trace Fork, a daughter of the late Perry and Josephine Martin Higginbotham. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Omer Fields; and one son, Junior Fields.

She was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.

In addition to Earnestine Harrison, survivors include seven daughters, Josephine Miller, Catherine Harrison and Dell Goff, all of Sissonville, Freda Jacob of Ohio, Ethel Jones of Winfield, Belle Bailey of Paden City, Jean Boggess of Goldtown; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Celia Mae Higginbotham McKinney (1915-2003) VA/WV
Celia Mae McKinney, 87, of Charleston passed to heaven Feb. 6, 2003, in Lee's Summit, Mo., following stomach cancer diagnosis in July 2002. She moved to her son's residence in August.
She was born Dec. 26, 1915, in Boissevain, Va., to Morris and Annie Mae Higginbotham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee McKinney.
She was a 1937 graduate of Charleston General Hospital School of Nursing and administered anesthetics there until the war. She worked at Charleston Memorial Hospital from 1963 until her retirement in 1978. Since 1951, she was a member of the Kanawha City Baptist Church, active in the women's circle, ABW Ministries, and the church choir. She started an exercise class at the church in 1979, and led it three times a week until July 2002.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Patty McKinney of Lee's Summit, Mo.; her grandson, Jason A. McKinney of Olympia, Wash.; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Betty Higginbotham of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one sister, Pauline Hedrick of Beckley.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Kanawha City Baptist Church, Kanawha City with the Rev. Alvin Cox officiating. Burial will be in Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, W.Va.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at J.E. Johnson Funeral Home in Kanawha City.

ALVADA -- Funeral services for Lawrence M. Higginbotham, 83, of 12212 W. Seneca County Road 10, Alvada, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, the Rev. Floyd Thomas officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Higginbotham died at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.
Born July 21, 1919 in Buffalo, W.V., to Abraham and Sophia (Runion) Higginbotham, he married Anna Belle Jeffers on October 9, 1941 in Prospect, and she died March 24, 1994.
Surviving are a son, Lawrence of Marion; three daughters, Mrs. Terry (Shirley) Shafer, Delta; Donna Miller, Upper Sandusky; and Mrs. David (Laura) Hall, Shelbourne, Vt.; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are six brothers, William, Earl, Ezra, Deward, Dencil and Robert Higginbotham; five sisters, Mary Hayes, Emma Weaver, Effie Bowers, and Margaret and Fanny Higginbotham, who both died in infancy; and two grandchildren.
A WWII U.S. Army veteran, he worked on the C & O Railroad for 38 years and was a member of the American Legion Post 354 Z in New Riegel.

RED STAR - The Rev. Robert Lee Higginbotham, 84, of Red Star, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, following complications of surgery.
Born Nov. 22, 1918, at Stone Cliff, he was the son of the late Henry Charles and Flora Mary Moses Higginbotham.
Rev. Higginbotham was a member and former pastor of Summerlee Freewill Baptist Church, a retired coal miner and a deliverer of the Lord's Word until he was called home.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley T. Gardner Higginbotham on Feb. 8, 2002; a granddaughter, April D. Higginbotham; five brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Higginbotham II and wife, Tammy, of Mossy, Eddie Higginbotham and companion, Nancy, of Scarbro and Charles Higginbotham and wife, Lisa, of Scarbro; five daughters, Connie Hizer and husband, Billy, of Red Star, Jenny Calvert and husband, J.R., of Fayetteville, Mickie Watson and husband, David, of Red Star, Judy Dennler and companion, Robert, of Mossy and Michelle Worrell and husband, Bill, of Red Star; four sisters, Clara Harrah of Beckley, Louise Irons of Parsons, Arbutus Bailes of Danese and Wilda Escue of St. Albans; a brother, the Rev. Gwendolyn Condra Higginbotham, 62, of St. Albans went home to be with her Savior July 31, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on April 22, 1941, in Whitwell, Tenn., to the late Woodrow "Doc" and Gladys Condra. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Lynn Lane; and her sister, Margaret Nelson.
She was a loving wife and homemaker, was a 1959 Graduate of Sherman High School, Seth, W.Va., and was a member of the Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans.

Tukie had worked at St. Francis Hospital and Home Health Care. She was a member of Teays Valley Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Eunice L. Stephens Higginbotham, 93, of Nitro died Nov. 2, 2003, in Riverside Nursing Home, St. Albans, after a long illness.
Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, Emory and Flora Stollings Stephens; her husband, B.L. “Pod” Higginbotham; and great-grandson, Eric Higginbotham.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a lifelong resident of Nitro and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Nitro, where she was also a member of the Women's Circle of the church.
She was owner of Eunice's Kiddieland, Nitro, and a former clerk for Cox's Department Store, Nitro.
Surviving are sons and their wives, Bobby Lee and Eileen Higginbotham of Knoxville, Tenn., James D. and Gloria Jean Higginbotham of Cross Lanes; four grandchildren, Robert Lee Higginbotham, Vicky Higginbotham Grey, Debbie Higginbotham King and Jan Higginbotham Gandee; 12 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

PRINCETON - Thomas J. 'T.J.' Higginbotham Jr., 76, of 606 Prince St., Princeton, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton.
Born Sept. 27, 1927, in Princeton, he was the son of the late Thomas J. Higginbotham Sr. and Macy Thorn Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham was retired from N&W Railroad. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Princeton and a former member of the Princeton Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, William 'Snooks' Higginbotham; and two sisters, Garnette Melrose and Ruby Nile.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Williams Higginbotham of the home; one son, Thomas William Higginbotham and wife Carole of Princeton; and one granddaughter, Adrienne Higginbotham of Princeton.

John Wesley Higginbotham, 91, of Mannington died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 2003) at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born May 12, 1912, at Mannington, a son of the late P. Wesley and Ginny Alice Mike Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham worked in the timber and coal mining industries all his life. He was a wonderful father and grandfather.
He is survived by three children and their spouses, Shirley and Marion Baker of Mannington, Robert Higginbotham of Mannington, and Sara and Carl Phillips of Mannington; 11 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn Efaw and Dorothy Higginbotham; two grandchildren, Preston and Tammy; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, George and William Higginbotham; and four sisters, Rosie Floyd, Hazel Baker, Ellie Cumberlidge and Margaret Efaw.

Hubert William Higginbotham

Hubert William Higginbotham, 73, 731 Broadmore Estate, Goshen, died at 12:05 a.m. Sunday at Goshen General Hospital. He had been ill since Feb. 9.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1930, in Prenter, W. Va., to Lorena (Lovejoy) and Hubert William Higginbotham Sr.
He married Virginia May Gobel on Feb. 19, 1945. She died on July 2, 1972. He later married Virginia L. Akers on Sept. 15, 1975, in Parris, Va. She died on Jan. 14, 2004.
He moved to Goshen in the 1960s and then moved back to West Virginia in 1974 where he worked as a coal miner for Carbon Fuel and US Steel. He returned to Goshen in 1984 and later retired from Schrock Manufacturing where he worked in maintenance for almost 20 years.
He was a past member of Goshen Moose No. 836 and United Mine Workers Union.
He is survived by two sons, Wes (Karen) Higginbotham and Gary (Sharon) Higginbotham, both of Goshen; two daughters, Sandy (Maynard) Wallace, LaFollette, Tenn., and Judy Lynn (Tracy) Huffman, South Charleston, W. Va.; three stepdaughters, Iris (Elbert) Kemper, Elkhart, Betty (Mike) McCubbins, Dayton, Ohio, and Gayle (Gustavo) Zamudio, Goshen; three stepsons, Cecil Junior Akers, Goshen, and Jerry (Pat) Akers, Elkhart, and Paul (Vickie) Akers, North Webster; 40 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carolyn (Joe) Hodge, Goshen, and Jean (Dean) Green, Winifrede, W. Va.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Higginbotham; and three sisters Edith Conway, Loretta Huffman and Donna Genesee.

Born March 5, 1920, in Boissevain, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Morris and Annie Mae Graham Higginbotham.
Mrs. Hedrick was a homemaker and a member of Shady Spring Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Allen Hedrick; two daughters, Jeanine and Sandra Sue; twin brother, Paul Higginbotham, and brothers, Morris and John Ellis Higginbotham; and a sister, Celia Mae McKinney.

David Lee Higginbotham, 56, of Grimms Landing, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, following a short illness. Born July 30, 1949, he was the son of the late Gerald R. and Florence Higginbotham; he was also preceded in death by a brother, Ernest “Dick” Higginbotham.
David was a graduate of Buffalo High School; retired grounds man for the IBEW Local 317, Huntington; former owner of the Arbuckle Carry Out, and an avid hang glider in his earlier years.
Survivors include sister, Barbara Buck of Buffalo; brothers, Vermont Higginbotham Jr. of Grimms Landing, William “Bill” Higginbotham of Grimms Landing, and Gerald Lee Higginbotham of Midway, Putnam County; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Samuel Clifton Higginbotham (1921-2006) WV
Samuel Clifton “Red” Higginbotham, 84, of Hurricane went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
Born October 15, 1921, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Brady Lawrence and Ora Smith Higginbotham. He was also preceded in death by granddaughter, Stephanie Dawn Higginbotham; his brothers, Clair “Buzz”, Charles, Paul and Arnold Higginbotham; his sister, Geanne Sieferman; and his half sisters, Ernestine and Claudia.
Red was a retired maintenance supervisor with Union Carbide Corporation, Tech Center, with 37 years of service. He served his country during World War II with the United States Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and stamp collecting. He and his wife were active with the Good Samaritans Camping Association in years past.
Red was also an active member in the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years, but is now affiliated with Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Ruby Marie Goins Higginbotham; his sons and daughters-in-law, Charles “Tom” and Fe' Higginbotham of Montgomery, Ala., and Ralph and Cindy Higginbotham of Hurricane; his grandchildren, Paul and Amy Higginbotham, both of Hurricane, Lisa Miller of Battle Creek, Mich., step-grandchildren, Tripp Vickers and Whitney Dyer.

Delbert Lee Higginbotham, 75, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away July 7, 2006, at home with cancer and heart problems.
Delbert was retired from General Motors, Columbus division, with 31 years of service. A resident of Columbus, Ohio, for 39 years, he was born in Grimms Landing May 29, 1931, to the late Mamie and Allie Higginbotham.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; daughter, Christine; son, Dale; grandson, Ryan; sister, Gerlean; and brother, Jim.
He is survived by his daughter, Wilda (Chris) Morris of Grimms Landing; sons, William Lee “Bill” (Brenda), and Chuck (Brenda) of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandsons; four step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister, Ilean White, Mason City; brothers, Herman of Grove City, Ohio, and Boyd of Grimms Landing; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Clayton Eugene Higginbotham (1931-2006) WV/OH

Clayton E. "Babe" Higginbotham, 75, of Amherst, Ohio, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at home following a long illness.

He was born Jan. 27, 1931, in Poca, W.Va., and moved to Lorain, Ohio in the early 1950s and moved to Amherst in 1999.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Hellen Louise (nee Coburn); sons, David Higginbotham and Harold E. Higginbotham, both of Lorain, Ohio, and William R. Higginbotham of Amherst, Ohio; brother, Robert Higginbotham of Poca; sister, Dolores Craigo of Poca; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Minnie (nee Lewis) Higginbotham, and sisters, Norma Mae Ward and Christine Bonette.

Clayton was laid to rest in Elmhurst Cemetery in Avon, Ohio.

Willadean Lois Craigo Higginbotham (1929-2006) WV
Mrs. Willadean L. Higginbotham, 77, of Poca went home to be with the Lord July 27, 2006, at home.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a lifelong resident of Poca. She was a member of Rock Branch Independent Church.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Timmy Wayne; parents, Ira and Addie Craigo; sister, Louella Jean “Batchie” Muck; and brother, Junior Craigo.
She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Higginbotham; son, Bobby Lee Higginbotham and wife, Virginia, of Eleanor; two daughters, Darlena Hope Higginbotham and husband, Jay, of Sissonville and Vickie Lynn Harrison and husband, Philip, of Winfield; one sister, Betty Brick and husband, Dan, of Culloden; two brothers, Ferrel Craigo of Winfield and Buddy Lee Craigo and wife, Mary, of Ohio; seven grandchildren, Sherry, Tod, Rodney, Amber, Kendra, Auna and husband, Matt, and Jonathan; five great-grandchildren, Alecia, Steven, Jeremy, Brookelyn, Jacob; and one great-great-grandchild, Tarah.
The funeral service will be 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House. The procession will leave the funeral home at 1:45 p.m.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Vesta Josephine Helmick Higginbotham (1916-2006) WV
Born in Salem, WV on Apr. 14, 1916
Departed on Aug. 3, 2006 and resided in Weirton, WV.
Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Vesta Josephine “Jo” Higginbotham, 90, of Weirton, passed away Thursday, August 03, 2006 at the Weirton Medical Center. Born April 14, 1916 in Salem, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Starkey Helmick. Vesta was also preceded in death by her husband Kenneth C. Higginbotham in 1981 and sister Viva Gale McCaskey.
Vesta retired from Weirton Steel where she worked as a Tin Flopper in the Tin Mill. She was a member of the Mercy Baptist Church, Golden Age Club and AARP.
She is survived by her daughters Barbara Jean Kraina Hays and her husband Winford of Weirton and Patricia Ann Andochick and her husband Dr. Edward Andochick of Frederick, MD; seven grandchildren: Tammy Hays Zivic and her husband Edward of Chesapeake, VA; Gina Hays Monte and her husband Robert of Bethel Park, PA; Tricia Hays LaMantia and her husband Chad of Weirton; Dr. Scott Andochick and his wife Erika of Potomac, MD; Dr. Lori Andochick of Ijamsville, MD; Dr. Todd S. Andochick of Arlington, VA and Beth Andochick-Myers and her husband Joseph P. of Ijamsville, MD and nine great-grandchildren.
Private visitation and services will be conducted at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Interment will be in Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV.

Wilda Fay Higginbotham Ennis Escue (1923-2006) WV
Wilda Fay Higginbotham Ennis Escue, 83, of St. Albans went home to be with Jesus on Oct. 9, 2006.
She was a homemaker and a resident of St. Albans for over 61 years. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, faithfully attending for 59 years and was active in the choir and the Ladies Circle. Wilda also taught Sunday school and helped in Bible school. She taught her children and grandchildren and, yes, even some great-grandchildren, that the greatest gift they could ever have is accepting Jesus as their Savior. Her legacy to her family was her faith in the Lord and her love for each one of them.
Wilda was preceded in death by her parents, Henry S. and Flora Mae Moses Higginbotham; her first husband, Basil Franklin Ennis; her second husband, George Wythal Escue; four sisters, Hattie, Louise, Loreen and Hilda; six brothers, Johnny, Clark, Oren, Robert, Jessie and Lawrence; and one stepson, Jimmy Ennis.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra “Sonnie” Ennis Grose and her husband, Steve, of Oak Hill; her five sons, Larry Ennis of St. Albans, David Ennis and his wife, Kay, of Hugheston and Roger Ennis, Delmar Ennis and his wife, Rita, and Keith Ennis, all of St. Albans; one stepson, Floyd Ennis of South Charleston; one stepdaughter, Gloria Smith of Florida; one brother, the Rev. Lewis Higginbotham of Coal City; two sisters, Clara Harrah of Beckley and Arbutus Bailes of Danese; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren, 12 step great-grandchildren and 12 step great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Connie Burns, who lived with her and took care of her; and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Tornado, with the Rev. Tommy Roberts, the Rev. David Smith and the Rev. Daniel Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jimmy, Brian, Jason, Davy, Phillip and Justin Ennis.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Bertha Violet Higginbotham Cobb, 97, of Page, WV died on Friday, October 13, 2006 at Hilltop Healthcare Center in Hilltop, WV.

Born April 10, 1909 at Putnam County, WV she was the daughter of the late Noah and Myrtia May Gullion Higginbotham.

Mrs. Cobb was a member of the Robson Church of Christ and a homemaker.

Her husband, Delbert G. Cobb; one son, Buddy Jewel Cobb; five sisters, Lou Higginbotham, Maxine Landers, Pearl Higginbotham, Olie Withrow and Cordieu King; and four brothers, Bob, Bill, Carl and Corbet Higginbotham preceded her in death.

Survivors include son, Delbert W. Cobb of Kincaid; foster sister, Emogene Tucker of Dunbar; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, two special nieces, Ruby Withrow of Kimberly, WV and Sue Luicart of Bancroft, WV and several nephews

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Sunday, October 15, 2006 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Services will be on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with Rev. Jack McNeely and Rev. Donald Floyd officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill WV.

Helen Josephine Higginbotham Herdman (1928-2006) WV
Helen J. Herdman, 78, of Buffalo passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 19, 2006, following a long illness.
She was a devout Christian, a member of Buffalo Church of God, a loving mother and devoted wife. She was a retired employee of The Diamond Department Store, a retired Girl Scout leader and attended West Virginia State College. She also owned and operated The Green Door Restaurant, Buffalo. She was recently a volunteer at the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center swimming pool, assisting other Gillian-Barre patients.
Born June 30, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Jonathan "Earl" and Esther Craig Higginbotham of Buffalo. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Herdman; two brothers, Ernest and Harold "Bub"; and one infant sister.
Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Bays Buck of Buffalo and Ada Lou Buzzard of Beaufort, N.C.; son, Donald A. "Donnie" Herdman of Buffalo; brothers, Denver Higginbotham of Oak Island, N.C., and Kenneth Higginbotham of Buffalo; grandsons, Robert Buck and Nick Tipsingh; and great-granddaughter, Sheyenne Buck.
Special family members in her life were Chad Burks, Shane Morris and Shanna Morris.
Special thanks goes to her friend and caregiver, Sue Nease.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Mitchell Burch officiating. Burial will follow in Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo.

Viola Belle "Vi" Higginbotham Nichols (1941-2006) WV
Viola B. “Vi” Nichols, 65, of Nitro, passed away Dec. 6, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House after a 4-year battle with cancer.
She was an administrative secretary for Union Carbide and retired with 29 years of service and was a member of First Church United Methodist in Dunbar.
She is survived by her very loving and devoted husband of 40 years and 4 days, Charles “Nick” Nichols and her brother, Charles E. Higginbotham of Alexandria, Va. “Vi” is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Dr. Okey B. Harless officiating. Burial will follow in Buffalo Memorial Park. Friends may call at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Stephanie Anne Higginbotham, 60, of McHenry, Md., and Fairmont, died Tuesday (Dec. 12, 2006) at the University of Arkansas Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.
Born July 26, 1946 in Flint, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Gail (Dougherty) Fredette.
Mrs. Higginbotham was the business manager for her husband’s dental practice in Fairmont. She was a licensed real estate agent, was a member of the Fairmont Field Club Golf Association and the Snowshoe Courtesy Patrol.
Surviving is her husband, Dr. Frederick “Fred” S. Higginbotham, III; and one daughter, Christina Lynn Murrin of Crested Butte, Colo.
The family will receive friends at the Burdock-Durst Funeral Home, 21 N. Second St., Oakland, Md., on Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald C. Matthews officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, McHenry, Md.

HIGGINBOTHAM, Joan E., 79, of Leap Street, New Martinsville, W.Va., died Thursday, December 14, 2006, at home.
She was born February 11, 1927, in New Martinsville, the daughter of the late Anna and DeWitt V. Lemon.
She was a graduate of Mount de Chantel Girl’s Academy in Wheeling, W.Va.; a retired Deputy Assessor from the Wetzel County Assessor’s Office; a volunteer at the Wetzel County Hospital; and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, William Higginbotham; a sister, Helen Walker; and a brother, William E. Lemon.
Survivors include a son, William Charles “Chuck” (Patricia) Higginbotham of Morgantown, W.Va.; two daughters, Ann (Lou) DiDonato of Madison, Ohio, and Ellen (J.P.) Ashooh of Clifton, Va.; five grandchildren, Beau (Sarah) Higginbotham of Baltimore, Md., Michael Higginbotham of Arlington, Va., Katie (Erik) Huffman of Morgantown and Justin and Ryan Ashooh of Clifton; two nephews, William D. and Larry Lemon, both of New Martinsville; three nieces, Lee Horn, also of New Martinsville, Kathy Shomo of Charleston, W.Va. and much loved and missed niece, Carol Canary of Winslow, Ariz.; and a few cherished friends.

Kathlean Marie Higginbotham, 80, of Grimms Landing, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at her home following a short illness.
She was a member of the Oma Chapel Church. Born Jan. 17, 1926, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Adkins Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Alberta “Maxine” Mack, 78, of Fairmont, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2007) at the Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Aug. 10, 1928, at Mobley, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Mary M. Cross Higginbotham. Mrs. Mack was a homemaker and Methodist by faith. She is survived by three brothers, Earnest Hibbs of Burton, James Hibbs of Meadowdale, and Harold Hibbs of Maryland; two sisters, Hazel Stiles of Crossroads and Laurine Hibbs of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Norman Mack; her longtime companion and friend, Richard Pascoe; four brothers, Sam Hibbs, Robert Thomas “Buster” Hibbs, Charles Taylor, and John “Bud” Hibbs; and seven sisters, Myrtle Fisher, Phyllis Smallwood, Lucy Rebold, Georgia Brewer, Alta Wilson, Mae Parrish, and Bonnie Kendall. Henry Michael Higginbotham, 48, of Pricetown, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2007) as the result of an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 20, 1958, at Fairmont, a son of the late Ross and Glenna Marie Weekley Higginbotham.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lisa A. Little Higginbotham of Pricetown; five children, Mrs. Andy (Beth Ann) Shaw of Smithfield, Mrs. Ora (Glenna) Hendershot of Pricetown, Sarah “Bubba” Higginbotham of Pricetown, Rachel of Clarksburg, Stephanie Higginbotham of Pricetown; grandchildren, Larissa Long, Dustin Higginbotham, Andrew Shaw, Hayley Long and Miah Long; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Little of Pricetown; siblings and spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Higginbotham Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Russell Kuhens, Elizabeth Fluharty, Mr. and Mrs. James (Debra) Liggett, Mr. and Mrs. Russell (Joyce) Wright, Mr. and Mrs. George (Sue) Liggett, Katty Gump, Mr. and Mrs. Gene (Betty) Cain, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Higginbotham, and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Higginbotham; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sanford Kuhens and Ernest Gene Kuhens; and father-in-law, Thomas R. Little.
Henry worked on drilling rigs. He was a dedicated timber cutter and truck driver for Dallison Logging. He worked at various other jobs during his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing Playstation, watching wrestling and working in his garage. He was loved and cherished by everyone who met him.
Friends and family may call at the Masters Funeral Home in Mannington today from 2-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Leroy Haught officiating. Burial will follow at the Pricetown Cemetery. At the request of the family, the casket will remain closed during the service.

Hazel P. Stiles, 91, of Wana, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2007) at her residence. She was born June 23, 1915, at Big Run, a daughter of the late Thomas J. Higginbotham and Margaret Ellen Barr Higginbotham. Mrs. Stiles was a homemaker and a former member of the Crossroads Community Chapel. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Mary Lou Stiles of Wana; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Don Pyle of Mount Morris, Pa.; three grandchildren and spouses, Randy and Beth Stiles of Wana, Karen Stiles and fiancé Danny Church of Wana and Joe and Charlotte Pyle of Mount Morris; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer Stiles, Lana Stiles, Aaron Pyle and Andrew Pyle. Also surviving is her devoted caregiver and best “buddy,” Lena Lewis, who had cared for Mrs. Stiles for more than seven years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlen Stiles; and four sisters, Myrtle Fisher, Phyllis Smallwood, Lucy Rebold and Maxine Mack. Orville H. “Bill” Higginbotham, 79, of 1111 Main St., Malta, Ohio, formerly of Kellys Creek, died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at his home.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Quincy.
Mr. Higginbotham was a self-employed upholsterer and an Army and Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.
He is survived by son, Edward C. (Peggy) Higginbotham of Malta; three grandchildren, Mark, Matthew and Masen Higginbotham; four sisters, Nora (Doodle) Higginbotham of McConnelsville, Ohio, Dora Whitney of Kellys Creek, Helen Groah of Mims, Fla., and Lucille Truman of Gauley Bridge; and one brother, Robert Higginbotham of Charleston.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Francis Higginbotham and Ollie Mae Stanley; his wife, Joan G. Gilbert Higginbotham; brothers, Ira Lewis and Albert; and sisters, Margaret Higginbotham and Edna Persinger.
No calling hours will be observed.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Upper Octorara Cemetery, Parkesburg, Pa.

WEST UNION — Rose “Rosie” Higginbotham, 37, of Route 2, West Union, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2007, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Jan. 19, 1970, in Wheeling, a daughter of William “Bill” and Pamela “Pam” Travis Higginbotham of Route 2, West Union.
Surviving are one brother, Eric Higginbotham, grandmother, Leota “Tootie” McKinney and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Her paternal grandfather, Lester McKinney, paternal grandparents, Melvin and Clara Higginbotham preceded her in death.

Imogene P. Higginbotham, 83, of Beckley passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007. Born Oct. 6, 1923, she is the daughter of the late John and Rose Smith.
Imogene enjoyed playing the piano and organ in various churches in West Virginia. She also entertained in Disney World. Imogene lived in Edgewater Florida from 1980-2000.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Heath C. Higginbotham; son, Thomas J. Higginbotham; brothers, John, Leonard, Paul and Albert Smith; and sister, Virginia Campbell.
Those left to cherish her memory include son, H. Conway Higginbotham of Tenn.; daughters, Patricia E. Ruth E. Higginbotham, 75, of Henderson, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
She attended Pleasant View Church in Gallipolis Ferry. She retired from the Mason County Board of Education after 20 years of service.
She was born July 24, 1931, in Mason County, the daughter of the late Orville and Mildred (Wamsley) Clonch.

Mrs. Snyder passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.
She was born on Aug. 13, 1947, in Frankford, W.Va., to William Higginbotham Jr. and Lula Bennett Higginbotham. She was a graduate of Frankford High School and attended Concord College. Mrs. Snyder has been a resident of Tyler for the past 23 years and was a member of Tyler Gospel Chapel.
Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her father, William Higginbotham Jr. She is survived by a loving family including her husband of 37 years, Stephen D. Snyder Sr. of Tyler; two sons, Stephen Snyder Jr. and wife Leigh Ann of Gilmer, and Michael Snyder of Tyler; her mother, Lula Higginbotham of Frankford, W.Va.; two brothers, William Higginbotham III, and Charles Higginbotham and wife Carla, all of Frankford, W.Va.; a sister, Lucy Tuckwiller and husband Ben of Lewisburg, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Taylor Burleson, Natalie Chandler, Sydney Snyder and Stephen Anderson Snyder.

Wilma Dodson Higginbotham, age 95, of Huntsville and formerly of Midway, died on Sunday, Feb. 17, in Huntsville. A visitation was held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Madisonville Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, WV, with burial in the Graceland Cemetery. Wilma was born on July 14, 1912, in Charleston, WV, to James William and Tina Austin (Rhodes) Dodson. She graduated from South Charleston High School and attended Marshall University. Wilma retired as Women’s editor for the Charleston Daily Mail. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Charleston, DACOWITS. She had lived in Midway since 1997 and was a Mormon. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents. Wilma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Cecil Reynolds of Midway; two grandchildren, James W. Payne-Fuller and wife, Thara, Lisa L. Mary Jeanette Higginbotham, 58, of Belle died March 4, 2008, at home after a long illness.
She was a retired salesperson from Montgomery Ward and was a member of ACME Pentecostal Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Perchie and Povie Adkins, and brother, Tom Adkins.
Surviving are her husband, Ralph Higginbotham; son, John Higginbotham and his wife, Sonja, of Belle; daughter, April Slack and husband, Tony, of Belle; brothers, Lyle Atkins and wife, Tilda, of Miami and Perchie R. Sylvia O. Allinder Higginbotham, 89, of Buffalo passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Buffalo and was employed for over 50 years at the G.L. Hulbert General Store and Buffalo Shopping Center. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.
Born June 2, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Parsons and Eva Warner Weaver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Delbert Allinder and Arnold O. Higginbotham, four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Allinder of Buffalo; granddaughter, Kimberlee Cochran of Columbus Ohio; and great-grandsons, Derrick and Brandon; along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Tim Day officiating. Burial will follow in Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo.

Rev. Lewis James Higginbotham Sr. (1916-2008) WV
The Rev. Lewis James Higginbotham Sr., 91, of Gatewood, formerly of Coal City, died March 5, 2008, after some time of declining health.
Born Nov. 24, 1916, at Layland, he was the son of the late Henry and Mae Mosses Higginbotham. He also was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; a daughter-in-law, Linda; brothers, Johnny, Clark, Lawrence, Jesse, Loren and Robert; sisters, Hilda, Wilda, Louise, Lorean and Hattie; and wife, Hazel.
He attended school on Beury Mountain and was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute. He was a retired Methodist minister, having retired last year from the Coal City charge. Also, he pastored churches at Crooked Run, Summerlee, Workman’s Creek, Backus Mountain, Fire Creek, Maplewood and Harvey Chapel, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
He was a member of UMWA Local Union 17, having worked in coal mines at Lochgelly, Summerlee and Beury Mountain. He had a radio program on WJLS for the last 25 years.
Surviving: sisters, Clara Harrah and Arbutus Bailes; children, Elizabeth, Lewis Jr., Charlotte and Thelma; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Knight; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was March 8 with Dr. Robert Stoddard officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Higginbotham and Donald Lake. She was a lifelong resident of the Hurricane area and a member of Indian Fork Primitive Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her friends at the John Henson Senior Citizen Center and visiting her children. FAYETTEVILLE — Lewis James Higginbotham Jr., 65, of Route 1, Fayetteville, departed this life on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley after a long battle with cancer. Born June 23, 1942, at Beury Mountain, he was the son of the late Rev. Lewis James Higginbotham Sr. and Hazel Pennington Payne. Lewis was a member of Harvey Chapel United Methodist Church on Salem Road. He was a 1960 graduate of Fayetteville High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran. A retired coal miner, he was a member of the UMWA. He was the owner and operator of Higginbotham Logging Co. “Bubby” enjoyed fishing, hunting and the great outdoors. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Ellen Buttrick Higginbotham, and a brother, Joseph Higginbotham. Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted son, John Christopher Higginbotham, and the pride of his life, his granddaughter, Ally, with whom he made his home. Also surviving him are his sisters, Elizabeth Boos, Charlotte Higginbotham and Thelma Workman, all of the Salem/Gatewood area; a brother-in-law, David Buttrick and wife, Eva; a very special niece, Angel Johnson and her husband, Jason; a nephew, Davie Buttrick, as well as several other nieces and nephews; and a special caregiver, Louella Vaughn. Alice Evelyn Adams, 81, of West Union, W.Va., died Friday, May 30, 2008, in Clarksburg. She was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Mellon, W.Va., the daughter of the late John Arley and Margaret Eddy Higginbotham. Alice worked in the garment industry fro 42 years, last working for United Manufacturing in Harrisville. In her later years, she worked at Carolyn’s Sandwich Shop in Harrisville. She is survived by one daughter, Alice Ann “Tiny” McKee of West Union; two brothers, Robert Lake Higginbotham of Mellon and Byrl Wade Higginbotham of Harrisville; one granddaughter, Tiffany Brooke Jemison; and several nieces and nephews including one special niece, Crystal Burwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Higginbotham; and one sister, Artie Johnson. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with the Rev. Frank Simons officiating. Burial will follow in Harrisville IOOF Cemetery. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her family.

DANESE — Arbutus Evelyn (Higginbotham) Bailes of Danese went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. She passed away following a short illness. Born April 24, 1922, at Layland, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Flora Mae Moses Higginbotham. She was a homemaker, and a loving wife and mother. She was raised on Beury Mountain. She was a doll collector and was loved by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Arthur Bailes; a son, Lawrence; brothers, Johnny, Clark, Lawrence, Jesse, Loren, Robert and Lewis; and sisters, Hilda, Wilda, Louise, Lorean and Hattie. Wilmoth “Mable” Higginbotham passed away on Friday, August 22, 2008, at Cedar Ridge Center, Sissonville. She was a member of the Belle Church of Christ. She loved to crochet and made many lap robes for nursing homes in the county. She was born June 8, 1919, at Mannington, a daughter of the late James Frederick Moore and Blanche Hayes Moore. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Lester Higginbotham; and her two sons, Richard and wife Patricia Higginbotham of Mannington and Ronald and wife Marsha Higginbotham of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jeff and Jennifer Higginbotham, Lori and Larry Higgins, Lisa and Pete Parrish, Brian and Nancy Higginbotham, Theresa and Jeff Justice, Nicole and Pee Wee Tipton and Melany and Adam Williamson; 13 great-grandchildren, Amber, Courtney, Emily, Trisha, Samantha, Lauren, Ashley, Michael, Cody, Rusty, Connor, Hannah and Andrew; several nieces and nephews; two sisters, Betty and Roy Ammons of Weston and Rosedale and Roy Hayes of Akron, Ohio. When the church closed, she attended West Farmington United Methodist Church with her son Rick until she entered the nursing home. She was a volunteer with the Marion County Rescue Squad. He retired from the WV Dept. of Highways with 30 years service and worked at Mid Atlantic Glass in Ellenboro for two years. He enjoyed farming, fishing and crafts. Mr. Denver Owen Higginbotham, 66, of Red House went home to be with the Lord October 9, 2008, in Hubbard Hospice House. He was retired from Avtex and IKON Solution and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Denver had a love for gospel music and played guitar for the Singing Reynolds Family, the Believers Quartet, the Revivers and the church choir. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Odus and Virgie Higginbotham, and sister, Zelda Barnett. Camela Ann Higginbotham Mallow, was called to Heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008. She was born Oct. 19, 1965, in Oak Hill, W.Va., a daughter of the late Marsha Yvonne Canterbury-Higginbotham and Gerald Higginbotham of Red Star. Camela was a proud mother of two children, Ashley Ince of Mount Carbon, and Kenneth Carl Mallow II of Elkins. Other survivors include her two sisters, Kim Sears and husband, Paul of Harvey and Jennifer Pennington and husband, Elmer of Red Star; four nieces, Amanda Sears-Hildebrand, Amber Sears Kees, Cassidey Pennington and Aaliyah Sears; two nephews, Tyler and Ethan Pennington; two great nieces, Kiersten and Baylee Hildebrand and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Gerald Ray Higginbotham (1934-2009) WV

Gerald R. Higginbotham, 74, of Nitro and Hurricane passed away Jan. 22, 2009, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Gerald was the owner and operator of Bogey's Inn and the Nitro Lounge. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Euna and Carl Higginbotham Sr.; and his brother, Edward Higginbotham. Gerald is survived by his ex-wife, Patricia Higginbotham of Hurricane; daughters, Deborah Higginbotham and Gerri McClelland, both of Hurricane, and Terri Higginbotham and Teresa Higginbotham, both of Nitro; sisters, Faye Lemmon and Janet Cunningham; brother, Carl Higginbotham Jr.; four grandchildren, Nicholas Fitzwater, Gerald Woodrow “G.W.” Fitzwater, Holly Jo Price and Jacob Michael McClelland; and one great-grandchild, Sephiroth Fitzwater. No services are planned at this time. A gathering of family and friends will be set at a later date. Mary Maxine Hartley Higginbotham, 85, of Buffalo passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, at her home following a short illness. She was a homemaker and a Christian. Maxine enjoyed cross-stitching and spending time with her family, whom she loved so dearly. Born April 4, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Lula H. Fisher Hartley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Higginbotham Sr.; son, John E. Higginbotham Jr.; three brothers and one sister. Survivors include daughters, Rosita (David) Casto of Buffalo and Kathy (Dempsey) Casto of Liberty; son, Ralph (Tracey) Higginbotham of Buffalo; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. PRINCETON — Mable Carper Wood, 60, of North Fifth Street, Princeton, died peacefully Wednesday night, February 18, 2009 at her home with her loving family surrounding her passing. Born May 8, 1948, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Fred Gilbert Carper and Florence Myrtle Thomas Carper. Mable was a graduate of Princeton High School. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church on the New Hope Road in Princeton, the D A V Auxiliary and the Princeton Women of the Moose Chapter # 355. Mable was a devoted wife, mother grandmother and friend. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, B.J. “Jack” Higginbotham, two sisters: Shirley Ann Carper and Geraldine Moles Wright, a stepson, Ronald Lee Wood, whom she loved very much. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Marshall Lester Higginbotham, 93, of Mannington, died Wednesday (May 6, 2009) at the Tygart Center in Fairmont. He was born June 19, 1915, at Mannington, a son of the late Luther Lee and Mary Elizabeth Carter Higginbotham. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Patricia Higginbotham of Mannington, and Ronald and Marsha Higginbotham of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Jennifer Higginbotham, Lori and Larry Higgins, Lisa and Pete Parrish, Brian and Nancy Higginbotham, Theresa and Jeff Justice, Nicole and Pee Wee Tipton, and Melany and Adam Williamson; 13 great-grandchildren, Amber, Courtney, Emily, Trisha, Samantha, Lauren, Ashley, Michael, Cody, Rusty, Connor, Hannah and Andrew; one brother, Harold Higginbotham of Elkins; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rose Dale and Roy Hayes of Akron, Ohio, and Betty and Roy Ammons of Weston. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Olive June Higginbotham, who passed away on Sept. 7, 2008; two brothers, Okey and Clay Higginbotham; four sisters, Carrie Burnfield and Sarah Burnfield, Lula and Rose; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Clem Higginbotham. Lester was a Christian and was a member of the Salt Lick United Methodist Church where he served as a lay speaker until its closing. Lester, along with other members of the Methodist church sang at the various churches in the area. He worked as a carpenter most of his life. The family would like to thank the staff of Tygart Center for taking such good care of Pappy during his stay at there. Ivan Oscar “Chick” Higginbotham, 90, of Sissonville (Grapevine) went to be with the Lord Friday evening, May 15, 2009, after a short illness at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Chick was born in 1918 in Jackson County, and was the son of the late Ivan Harrison Higginbotham and Avilee Higginbotham. Ivan retired from E.I. DuPont with 34 years service as a truck driver. He retired in June 1981. Chick lived most of his life in Kanawha County, and was a charter member of Goldtown Community Church. He gave his life over to the Lord on Father's Day 1981. He was also preceded in death by loving wife of 57 years, Velma I. Baldwin Higginbotham; mother-in-law and father-in-law; three half sisters; three half brothers; one brother-in-law; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by son, Veldon O. Higginbotham and his wife, Janice L.; daughter, Patricia G. Pennington and her husband, Edward, all of Sissonville; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. PRINCETON — Kenneth Higginbotham, 70, of Princeton, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Lincolnton, N.C. Born August 24, 1938 at Princeton, he was the son of the late Grady Higginbotham and Alta Clark Higginbotham. Mr. Higginbotham served 23 years in the U.S. Army, including in Korea and Vietnam, before retiring in 1978. He received many medals and campaign ribbons. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed gardening and cooking. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Basham Higginbotham in 2005; one brother, David Clark Higginbotham; and one granddaughter, Natasha Higginbotham. Gwendolyn Mae Stephens Higginbotham Harris (1934-2009) WV

Mrs. Gwendolyn Mae Harris, 74, of Nitro went home to be with the Lord October 4, 2009, in CAMC Teays Valley Hospital after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Harris was retired from Ben Franklin with 41 years of service and was an 11-year employee of Kings Way Christian Church Daycare where she loved her “babies.” Gwen referred to the children as her “babies”; they had a special place in her heart and she had a special place in theirs as well. She was also a member of Rock Branch Independent Church.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Gordon Eugene Higginbotham and Clyde C. Harris; parents, Stace and Pearly Stephens; and mother-in-law, Ruby Edith Higginbotham.
She is survived by three children, Reba Parsons, Pam Higginbotham and Bobby Higginbotham; brother, Doyle Stephens; sisters, Thelma Withrow and Margie Cook; and two granddaughters, Chelsea-Keye Michelle Parson and Alex Courtney Parson. Gwen is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A tribute to the life of Mrs. Gwendolyn Mae Harris will be 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Ronk officiating. Entombment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cunningham Memorial Park Upper Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans.

Charles Eugene Higginbotham (1931-2009) WV/VA

Charles E. Higginbotham, formerly of Dunbar, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, after a long illness in a Richmond Va. hospital, with his family by his side.
Born Oct. 30, 1931, in Charleston, he was retired from the West Virginia Department of Employment Security.
He is survived by his sons, Chuck of Tampa, Fla., and Michael of Midlothian, Va.; his sisters, Juanita Thurgood of Canton Ohio, Emogene Kiser of Spring Hill, and Margaret Hensley of Akron Ohio; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A special thanks goes to his sister, Emogene, for her love and support over the last few years.
His body has been cremated and he requested no memorial service.

Vera Lucille Higinbotham Sikinow (1918-2009) WV

At almost 91 years of age, Vera Higginbotham Sikinow slipped silently away to the "other side" to be with loved ones. Vera, born in Carolina on Nov. 14, 1918, to parents Fred and Margaret Shaeffer Higginbotham, had a long, interesting life. She attended Monongah High School. In 1934 she married George Sikinow, and they moved to Kellytown into the home they had built and finished with stone. They had one daughter, Betty Jo Anne. After marriage, she enjoyed working with flowers, home decorating and using her cosmetology skills. She advised Girl Scouts, led Methodist youth group and helped with lunches at the elementary school during World War II. She served as president and vice president of Carolina Homemakers Club. In 1977 after a history of seven strokes, she lived in Tiffin, Ohio, with her daughter and her family in order to attend the Tiffin Academy of Hair Design. In 1978 Vera passed her state board exam with honors. Later, three additional strokes hampered her mobility, but she managed to work with her flowers. She and George adopted two dogs, Little One and Scar, which brought much joy into their lives. Vera had resided at the Wishing Well (now Tygart Center) in Fairmont since 2006. Her husband passed away in January of 2003. She has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Richanne, (Mike), Erica; David, (Barb), Devon, John; and Mark, (Martelia), Alex and Zack. She was blessed with many friends and loving family members. She was preceded in death by her son in-law, Richard R. Cunningham; one brother, Fred Higginbotham; and two sisters, Jerry Southern and Margie Alkire. Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Jack Flint officiating. Lee Ann Romeo and Edgar Wayne Southern will honor Vera with musical selections. Marjorie E. Higginbotham Richmond (1918-2009) WV

Marjorie H. Richmond, 91, of Charleston, formerly of Thurmond, passed away December 19, 2009, at home.
Mrs. Richmond was born May 31, 1918, in Lookout and was a daughter of the late Newton W. and Rosa M. (Hinkle) Higginbotham.
She grew up in Winona and lived for many years in Thurmond, two places she dearly loved.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Everette; brothers, Arnett, Herbert, Billie, and Houston Ray; and sisters, Mary, Marie, and Gladys Carol.
She met her future husband, Everette, while working at her Aunt Ida McClure's restaurant in Thurmond. They were engaged on December 14, 1942, and were married on June 3, 1943, in Charleston. They set up housekeeping in Thurmond.
Mrs. Richmond was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine for more than 50 years and served as the Worthy Matron of the Thurmond Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was active in many volunteer organizations, including the Heart Fund, the Cancer Society, 4-H, and Ladies Aid. She also served for many years as an election official during primary and general elections. She was a member of Thurmond Union Church and later of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her children, E. Roger and his wife, Judy, of Wilmington, Del., Larry and his companion, Anne Johnson, of Baltimore, Md., and Rose Ann Walker and her husband, John, with whom she lived, of Charleston; grandchildren, Joe and his wife, Renee of Bear, Del., Mary Ann and Rachel Richmond of Baltimore, Md., PFC Justin A. Beall, U.S. Army, of Monterey, Calif., and Matthew and Daniel Walker of Charleston; and great-grandchildren, Trevor and Alissa Richmond of Bear, Del.
Other survivors include sisters, Vermont Neff of Danese, Hilma Nolan of Wilmington, Del., and Shirley Nolan of Bear, Del.; brother, Jackie Higginbotham and wife, Barbara, of Rock Hill, S.C.; former daughter-in-law, Judy Whitehill of Baltimore, Md.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews; and many friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Richard McGuire and the Rev. Todd Wright officiating. Burial will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
