Mary Lou Higginbotham (1936-2010) WV/FL

Higginbotham Mary L., passed away on November 27, 2010. Mary was born on January 9, 1936, in Prenter West Virginia to Millard Percy and Alma Arminda Higginbotham. She was born into a large family, one of eight brothers and sisters, whom she was very close to throughout her life. In West Virginia, Mary pursued various career paths of which two consisted of a Hospital Technician and a Political Job for the state. She made numerous great friends in West Virginia, whom she kept in touch with throughout her life. On November 2, 1963, Mary gave birth to her daughter Glenna, whom she always referred to as her greatest and most important person in her life. Mary, lovingly referred to as "Mimie", was a loving, proud, and supportive mother."My Mimie" was the most wonderful mother that anyone could ever ask for as well as my best friend. The strong bond between us will always be there and will never fade or disappear. However, Glenna was not her only love. Mary had a second love of her life named Lucas. He was only a dog to some, but to Mary, he was her Grandson. She affectionately called Lucas "Her Little Man". Lucas traveled with us on trips and she took him with her on errands, only to end up at a drive thru somewhere buying him a hamburger on the way home. Additionally, Mary had a close relationship with her Son-In-Law Jorge, whom she cared for very much. Whether they were shopping or trying out a new recipe, Jorge was the son she never had. In the early 60's, Mary's parents, Percy and Alma Higginbotham moved to Miami, Florida with other family members. Mary moved with Glenna to join her family in 1965. When Mary first arrived, she lived with the family that was already in Miami, whom she was very close to and she received a lot of love and support. On September 6, 1965, Mary set out on her final career path when she began working for the local newspaper at the Miami Herald Publishing Company. She referred to The Miami Herald as a "Family Business" as she worked there with her Brother, Paul Higginbotham, and Brother-In- Law Dick Bowles. Mary had numerous colleagues and co-workers as well as many good friends whom she referred to as her Second Family. Mary was always thought of with respect, as a hard working woman with a wonderful work ethic. It has been said that Mary was thought of fondly and cared so much for the people who worked for her. One previous work friend stated that Mary was a wonderful person whom will be greatly missed. Mary loved going to dinner with family and friends at her favorite restaurants and catching up on old times. She also enjoyed cooking and having birthday parties and holiday dinners at her house with the family. Mary loved her family and took joy in spending time with them. She enjoyed talking to both her family and friends regularly and cherished the conversations that she had with those she loved. Additionally, Mary loved the Arts. She enjoyed going to various cultural venues in both Dade and Broward. Mary went to concerts, art shows, exhibitions and numerous plays and musicals, stating that, "The Phantom of the Opera" was her favorite. She would always say that it only got better each time she saw it. Mary also cared about those she did not know, whether in the community or around the world. She always donated to various charitable organizations such as sponsoring a child, sponsoring clean water in another country, helping the animal community, donating money during a telethon or whenever needed or helping out the developmentally disabled to have a great day at the Youth Fair. Mary was known by many names, Mother, Sister, Aunt, Great Aunt, and Friend. She was loved and respected by all who knew her. Whether family or friend, she was always there to offer love, friendship and any support that she could provide whenever needed. Mary was a true treasure here on Earth and will be greatly missed by all who knew & loved her. She is survived by: Daughter, Glenna J. Higginbotham, Son-In-law, Jorge M. Hernandez, Sister, Deloris J. Wanda Lee Higginbotham Stone (1931-2019) WV

Wanda Lee (Higginbotham) Stone, of Buffalo, Putnam County, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at her home following a long illness. She would have been 88 years of age on May 18.
Wanda was the only child of the late Charles Lee and Ida Mae Allen Higginbotham. Her early years were spent in Kanawha City where her father owned a shoe repair shop. After his untimely death when Wanda was only 6 years old, she and her mother moved to their ancestral home on Jim Ridge, Putnam County. They relocated to Dunbar during Wanda's teenage years and she graduated from Dunbar High School in 1949. Following graduation, Wanda worked candy counter retail sales at the former S.S. Kresge Department Store in downtown Charleston.
On December 22, 1952, Wanda married Donald Ray Stone and in 1954 the couple bought their first home in Buffalo. Don passed away on May 10, 1996. Wanda continued to live on the same property that she and Don first purchased, and this year she reached the milestone of 65 years as a Buffalo resident.
However, Wanda did enjoy traveling, seeing new sights and meeting new people. Before her health declined, she was a frequent cruise line traveler to Alaska, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, often accompanied by her granddaughter. She also visited Canada and journeyed throughout the Midwestern, Eastern, and Southern United States.
Wanda was a Christian and for many years a member of the Midway United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and directed and taught Vacation Bible School. More recently, she attended the Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
Wanda had a soft heart for animals and was known informally around Buffalo as the "catwoman" for adopting and caring for stray cats. She collected porcelain and ceramic angel figurines. Her periodic yard sales with her good friend, Linda Whittington, were well-known throughout the area for their quality second-hand merchandise.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Wanda was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Ray Stone, and by a cousin, Maxine Painter, who was like the sister she never had.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gary Hawkins of Elkview; her granddaughter and the light of her life, Elizabeth Lee "Lisa" Hawkins of Washington, D.C.; a special nephew and niece, Michael and Colleen Stone of Robertsburg; a host of cousins and other extended family and friends; and her beloved cat, Bushy. She is also survived by Rick and Kay Casto of Buffalo, whom she loved dearly like a son and daughter-in-law.
Sincere thanks to Chris Burgess and her family for the devoted care they gave to Wanda throughout the last eight months of her life.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Rev. Randy Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, Jim Ridge. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Flowers are welcome, although the family encourages memorial donations to the Gabriel Project of WV, P.O. Box 4663, Charleston, WV 25364. The Gabriel Project is a nonprofit organization providing cribs, car seats, formula and other essential baby items to low-income families in 27 WV counties.
